Review for Battle Fleet: Ground Assault. PC game, the video game came out on 01/05/2018
Battle Fleet: Ground Assault is the direct sequel to Battle Fleet e Battle Fleet 2, fairly successful turn-based strategies released for Ipad, Android and PC and which saw us in command of massive naval fleets engaged in the most furious campaigns of the Second World War. Battle Fleet: Ground Assault, as you can easily guess from the name, instead takes us to the battered land battlefields, this time at the head of massive formations of tanks.
The basic structure of the game does not differ much from that of its predecessors: the clashes are structured in turns, during which we have to decide if and how much we want to move our wagon, the angle of movement we want to keep at the end of the turn and , obviously if in line of fire, if attacking enemies. Of course, all the performance of the tank, such as speed, armament and so on, directly depends on the class of vehicle we are currently using: light, medium and heavy.
The light tanks, as it is easy to guess, are definitely the fastest and most maneuverable class, very useful for reconnaissance and to track down the opposing forces. Unfortunately, this class pays the price for its agility with very light armor and very limited armament. A light tank can only perform little more than a nuisance action against a heavy class, a category of tanks directly opposite. Heavy tanks are slow to scare, but possess nearly impenetrable armor and simply devastating weaponry. A couple of their well-placed shots are capable of reducing any type of opponent to impotence. The prince class in Battle Fleet: Ground Assault, however, remains that of light tanks, good in everything without excelling in anything, but the real backbone of every formation.
When our tanks come into line of sight with the opposing side, it starts to get serious. Attacks, in Battlefleet: Ground Assault, depend a lot on the type of tank we are currently using and are not reduced to a simple "set the target and press the fire command". In fact, we must calculate not only the direction in which we intend to fire but also, and above all, the elevation of the barrel of the weapon, a fundamental detail for modifying the range of the shot. In addition to all this, of course, we must also always take into account the type of weapon we are using. It makes no sense to attempt an indirect shot with a light gun, while it makes perfect sense if we use one of the heavy howitzers mounted on tank hunting vehicles. Furthermore, even when a shot should go to sign, it is not certain that it does damage: we must always take into account the angle of fire and the armor plating of the target. Sometimes a shot that looked really textbook ends up bouncing miserably on enemy armor. The extremely accurate handling of physics and ballistics is one of the most characteristic features of Battle Fleet: Ground Assault.
When a cannon shot hits the target correctly, the hit tank can suffer a generic amount of damage or be damaged in some of its more or less fundamental components, causing a certain negative status to be applied to the tank in question: damaged tracks the movement is halved, with the engine destroyed it is reset and so on.
The battlefield also offers “strategy cards”, which can be used by the first player who reaches them with a unit. These cards allow you to repair a certain damage, increase a certain characteristic or, even, order a bombing from the sky or a targeted artillery fire of our choice. Not very "simulative", but it is a nice idea, which breaks the monotony of certain games a bit.
Yes, because Battle Fleet: Ground Assault could be a bit too repetitive in the long run. The single player campaign, also set in the Second World War, is really negligible, very little strategic and in some passages even a bit chaotic. The real fun of Battle Fleet: Ground Assault is multiplayer: fighting against online opponents and seeing your profile rise in the rankings is the best of this game which, due to its structure, is much more suitable for multiplayer than for the campaign for single player.
In terms of graphics and sound we are not exactly at the top: the environments and wagons are undeniably well made, but still have a dated look, without too many significant details. Some animations are really bad, especially when we damage a building.
Battle Fleet: Ground Assault, while not a bad game, is likely to be attractive only to a small circle of fans. Despite the very casual aspect, it has mechanics that must still be assimilated properly, and this is definitely a good, too bad for the repetitiveness and the underlying boredom, especially in the single player campaign. On the other hand, the competitive online is very fun, a real workhorse of the game, which makes the experience a sort of turn-based World of Tanks.
