The Crash Bandicoot series now seemed dead, dead, gone, buried under meters and meters of earth and destined never to see the light again. After having wisely tested the waters, however, Activision has well thought of bringing out the shovel and reviving a brand that still has many loyal fans out there in the world. What better way to do this than by making a real remake of the first three episodes that appeared on the original PlayStation? This is how Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was born, a collection of great value and which in a year of life on PlayStation 4 has collected truly remarkable sales.
As it was logical to expect, since Activision is the holder of the rights, the exclusive PlayStation 4 was only temporary and in these days the Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch editions have also arrived in stores. As always, the latter is the most "delicate" version to deal with also due to the limited hardware resources of the machine, so let's see if the port is worth your money or not!
In this first year of life we have seen many qualitatively excellent titles on Nintendo Switch; the most incredible, however, are the ports of products designed for other hardware, games that from a technical point of view are very advanced. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is just the latest in a long line and being a platform with a high level of difficulty, the frame rate is an indispensable element to be able to get to the end of each stage. What are the compromises that the developers have made, then? The first element that immediately catches the eye is the resolution, 720p in docked mode, 480p in undocked mode; however, to improve visual cleanliness there is an anti-aliasing filter that reduces the jagged effect.
The textures have seen a reduction in resolution and effects applied; despite this they remain well made and full of details. The geometry of the levels has been slightly lowered while it is in the shadow system that we have seen the most consistent cuts: they are in fact less detailed than in the other versions and often objects such as foliage or trees are almost no longer equipped with them. A bad conversion then? Far from it: the reduction of details and effects has been carried out in an intelligent way, thus keeping the visual impact intact and at the same time allowing a stable frame rate, almost always anchored to 30 frames per second.
From the point of view of the contents, no level has been cut and the whole package is present in the game cartridge for sale. No further downloads are required therefore, a fairly common practice when it comes to Switch games, while loading times are extremely short compared to the original PlayStation 4 version. If you want to buy the digital version instead, the space occupied is only 5.5 GB, great job Vicarious Visions! On the other hand, what does not completely satisfy is the input lag: the response times are in fact a bit higher than all the other versions, thus making Crash a bit “heavier” to control. Nothing shocking, but we hope that this defect will soon be corrected by a patch.
Among the most interesting elements of this version of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy we find not only the possibility of playing the entire experience in undocked mode without any heavy compromise, but also the possibility of setting up some new levels that were originally discarded. in PlayStation versions. An addition that is also present in all other versions but that has only been made available with this new release. However, those who had already purchased the title on PlayStation 4 do not worry: Activision has promptly published a patch to bring even the 2017 release on par.
Playing the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy on Nintendo Switch is a truly fantastic experience. What better console to tackle a platformer than the latest addition to Nintendo? In fact, the library of this machine grows from month to month, gaining very different titles and, above all, the support of third parties. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is the perfect title to keep you company under the umbrella: however, arm yourself with a lot of patience because the "nastiness" with which these three games treat the average user is really great!
