Review for Dungeon Defenders: Awakened. Game for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the video game was released on 28/05/2020
Are you looking for a game that presents a considerable challenge in its simplicity, but which at the same time is not one of those overly competitive and stressful video games? Well then this title is definitely for you.
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is a video game developed by Chromatic Games and published by the same. It is a tower defense with typical RPG mechanics. It was released on May 28, 2020 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It was developed using the free Unreal Engine.
First of all let's talk briefly about the graphic sector of Dungeon Defenders: Awakened. This is not to be underestimated for any reason. We say this because the player interested in buying the title may initially doubt its qualities considering this aspect. In fact, placed in front of a cartoon graphic style, he might think that it is a game of little importance or a certain banality, but in reality the challenge and the structure that make up the gameplay prove the exact opposite.
The only really mundane aspect is the storyline, which has the sole purpose of putting a simple context into the game. It is in fact the less full-bodied aspect, as in the concept conceived by the developers it certainly does not want to be the main strength of the title. But as just said, it is not essential and does not affect the fun that the game can offer.
Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is set in Etheria, where four valiant heroes have by pure chance awakened the ancient forces of evil. Such entities had been dormant all along thanks to the crystals of Etheria. In order to restore peace and tranquility, it will be up to these four particular characters to defeat the army of demons.
So let's talk about the gameplay, certainly the best aspect of all Dungeon Defenders: Awakened. At this point you will have already understood that this is certainly a more important and interesting aspect than all the others.
The goal is to defend one or more crystals from the different waves of enemies. A modest but sought-after variety of demonic-themed fantastical creatures ranging from goblins to kobolds, each with their own characteristics and abilities.
At first the player may find the gameplay slow, quite monotonous and with little variety, but this is not the case: as you level up with your characters, you unlock the ability to upgrade your defenses. Each character has his own four types of turrets or barriers consistent with the interpreted class. Combined with those of other players they can be part of a powerful strategy to defend against the hordes.
The fights are in real time, with the player who with his character can defeat every single undead with his equipment and skills.
Since the title also has characteristics typical of a role-playing game, the loot can also be enhanced in a similar way to the character. This feature allows a wide diversification of the gameplay. Between one wave and another it is possible to switch from one hero to another, an option that allows the user to play with the characters that are closest to his fighting style. Also because the way in which the mechanics have been designed does not require him to accumulate experience over and over to level up, even if this can be done in order to facilitate victory in the most difficult maps.
Are present five game modes: Campaign, with 15 maps divided into three acts; Survival, which increases the number of waves from the usual five to twenty-five; Challenge, which requires a lot of attention but rewards the user with special prizes; Mix Mode, with random waves; Pure strategy, a mode extremely similar to the old tower defense, in which the player must rely only on his defenses without being able to intervene directly against the enemies through the use of the hero.
Dungeons Defenders: Awakened is a decidedly modern tower defense, in which the player gets to the heart of the fight. Despite the considerable challenge that the game offers especially in the more advanced hours, it is still possible to play in the way the user likes most. Don't be fooled by its apparently childlike appearance, trust it could become a real pastime to share with three other friends.
