Hunt: Showdown, partly Monster Hunter, partly Battle Royale, largely spiritual successor to the semi-unknown masterpiece for PlayStation 2 which was Darkwatch. Yes nice people, we are talking about a Hunting game developed and distributed by Crytek, naturally with a prevalent online multiplayer component, which catapults us into an alternative western context, where the natural brutality of the setting (Louisiana in 1885, to be precise) blends in a spectacular way with horror themes of the mold, not always vaguely Lovecraftian.

In practice, we will be called upon to face zombies (at best), interdimensional monsters and demons, all obviously with rifle shots, sticks of dynamite and large-caliber guns. Yes, because Hunt: Showdown is just that: a first-person Hunting game that mixes horror and old-fashioned western themes. Basically, an absolutely cool plot.

In short, in this "imaginary" Louisiana we have to think about the period following a huge, very dangerous, and uncertain necromantic voodoo ritual. As it is obvious to expect, the ritual translates in zero time into a gigantic epic-fail and is interrupted but, at the same time, it leaves very heavy paranormal aftermaths in our world. At this point with bayou, countryside and villages infested with beast-demons and zombie corpse eaters, the only sensible answer is ... Send bounty hunters to do the dirty work!

And this is where we will come into play. After a fairly simple tutorial, which allows us to level a minimum the character most of our liking, widely modifiable even later, to take down a spider demon (weak and injured, poor star!) All by ourselves and to earn some money to improve. equipment, we will be thrown into the basic, but brutal, bounty hunting system. We will then be called upon to hunt down a certain creature, in a certain environment, with a team of companions, who however will not prove to be friendly forever.

Yes, because, if to make the skin of the countless monsters we find around we will all be "a fàza, a ràza", once the abomination is overthrown there will be none left, and a ferocious "fratricidal" fight will be triggered to bring safe size. In practice, for those who have already understood, it will also be possible to have the nabbi do the heavy work, slaughtering them later to take all the credit. And the booty.

This makes Hunt: Showdown unique - no one is ever safe! Never, in any other game, has the saying "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" been worth more. Be that as it may, if after killing the big monster you manage to leave the area unscathed, you will receive good rewards, both in terms of money and equipment.

It's not like there's just no reward for the whole group, style Monster Hunter World, but in any case the title favors a sort of encouragement to individualism, even aggressive. Of course, all of this spice up the gameplay.

Technically we are dealing with a game that could have been much, much better. The graphics, while always remaining on an excellent level, sometimes fall into unforgivable flaws, such as a random as well as annoying pop-up effect of the background elements, which reappears randomly even if we run everything with a video card nvidia Geforce GXT 1050, perhaps not the current top of the range, but certainly more than enough to guarantee the fluidity of the action for even more complex products than Hunt: Showdown. Fortunately, the problem really occurs randomly, not affecting the gameplay, which instead is complex and deserves to be studied and mastered with interest. Understanding how and when to set a trap, attack head down or plan (perhaps together with the other players ) intricate plans to hide some monstrosity in the best possible way are really well thought out and fun mechanics.

Even if we tried it on PC, with the classic keyboard + mouse controls by default, Hunt: Showdown can be played easily even with a pad, thus having an extremely detailed, customizable and, therefore, usable mapping of the controls.

With Hunt: Showdown we are talking about an extremely enjoyable game, conceived and created to give the maximum with online multiplayer, its true source of fun. A situation not unlike Warhammer: Vermintide 2, but which places the player in front of much more tactical choices, studied and without much space for improvisation. The fact of not being able to trust anyone, ultimately, adds flavor to the whole. An experience to try, absolutely!
