Lineage II: Revolution - Review

Review for Lineage II: Revolution. Game for Android and iOS, the video game was released on 15/11/2017

MMORPGs are a genre loved and hated at the same time, since most of the titles are free to play and have a not indifferent pay to win component. Over the years, however, we have become accustomed to discovering titles that allow you to enjoy most of the content without spending a cent, such as Lineage II: Revolution.

In Lineage II: Revolution we were faced with a title with great potential and from the strong desire on the part of the developers to create the definitive MMORPG to play outside the home, without sacrificing the graphic beauty and the vastness of the game world, which have proved to be exceptional. Note of merit also for the localization in Spanish, which for titles of this type is not always obvious.

Lineage II: Revolution - Review

Welcome to Aden

The first task that is proposed to us in Lineage II: Revolution, as in any self-respecting RPG, is the creation of our character, choosing a race among: Human, elf, dark elf and dwarf, then selecting one of the subclasses present among warrior, ranger and wizard, and then moving on to real customization which unfortunately is limited to the possibility of changing the hair and some details here and there, thus making the various characters very similar to each other.

Once our avatar has been created, we will be introduced to the game world through some presentation videos, thanks to which we will be able to understand various aspects of the plot, in some aspects also particularly interesting and engaging.

As a spin-off of the Lineage series born on PC, also the mobile version Lineage II: Revolution tends to maintain the same style both for the characterization of the characters and for the pseudo-medieval fantasy settings, which includes characters very distant from reality as the oriental-style games have accustomed us: you will immediately notice the elegant finishes of the various characters and the sensual attitude of the female characters, which will contribute in their own way to making the setting lively and colorful of game.

Exaggerated auto-play!

From the point of view of gameplay, Lineage II: Revolution manages to amaze, presenting a interesting and extremely complex gameplay for a mobile title. What we will be asked to do will be quite simple, especially in the first minutes of the game: in fact it will be almost all based on main and secondary (sometimes repetitive) quests that will allow us to discover new places and enemies, also allowing us to acquire new skills and equipment.

The underlying problem that affects this title is one too invasive presence of auto-play, which with the simple press of a button allows you to perform any action automatically. When you start the game, this setting is already active by default: just click on a quest to make the character start walking automatically towards the goal. In this way, the player only has the task of reading and skipping the dialogues, and then watching the character again head towards his new goal, be it a fight or another NPC with which to talk.

The auto-play setting can be turned off, but it often remains essential given that the commands are sometimes not accurate and responsive, forcing us to opt for this automatism that somehow kills the general gameplay.

Pay to win or not?

The progression of the character seemed to us quite linear and conforming to what are the standards of modern RPGs. The weapons and armor that we will find during our journey will be fundamental as we level up, especially to be competitive in PVP: once equipped we will have to improve them by fusing weaker items or combining others of the same rank. As soon as our piece of equipment has reached level 30, it can be brought back to level 1 by increasing its quality, making it much more powerful.

As for the branches of abilities and skills, we are more or less facing the classic mobile title, even if in this case the pay to win component seemed to us to be little marked. In Lineage II: Revolution in fact - although obviously it could make things much easier for us -  it is not mandatory to purchase items with real money to continue our adventure, but we will be able to play in absolute tranquility, simply by investing a little more time to obtain certain useful items.

We found some slight disparities in PVP, where those who bought real currency items are slightly better off than those who prefer to play without spending a cent. The choice of the developers to make the game so open to everyone gives us hope for the future of this title, which unlike many others could really mark a turning point in mobile gaming.

Graphically satisfying

From a technical point of view Lineage II: Revolution raises the bar and is placed in a range of games that require the latest generation devices to be enjoyed at their best. Generally, in fact, older devices will struggle to run the game in a decent way, even if in their rescue there is a quite scalable game engine which allows you to adjust some graphic details in order to improve the fluidity of the frame rate.

If you have a more recent device, you will probably be able to admire the large amount of detail present in the game, thanks also to the power of the engine used, or the Unreal Engine 4, which allows realistic lighting and graphics effects that go perfectly with the style of Lineage II.

The overall optimization of the game didn't seem great to us, in fact, even on the latest generation devices there are some slowdowns and overheating, caused by a really intense use of the GPU. Speaking instead of networking, we did not encounter any noteworthy problems, in fact the servers seemed perfectly responsive both in Wi-fi and 4G.

Lineage II: Revolution - Review

Lineage II: Revolution is certainly one of the most valid free-to-play on mobile, both as regards the graphics sector and for the richness of the contents offered. The gameplay is fun and addicting, even if the auto-play didn't convince us and we believe it would have been better to look for a better formula for the management of the commands rather than letting everything act automatically. Nothing to say about the graphics sector, which thanks to the Unreal Engine 4 is confirmed as one of the best in circulation, even if the poor optimization penalizes all those people who play on devices that are not too performing or in any case not recent. We are very confident about the future of Lineage II: Revolution and we very much hope to be able to enjoy new content and improvements with the next game updates.
