In 2015 it landed, in the west, on Playstation 4 on Playstation 3 and Steam Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late, fighting game title produced by French Bread and published by Arc System. The product at the time turned out to be a game with excellent gameplay mechanics but a poverty of content in terms of arenas, characters, soundtracks and plot. To expand the contents of your title, and make the generation leap, Arc System e French Bread have decided to re-propose in the game in a revised and updated version with Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late [st], obtaining a discreet result that greatly enhances the original work.

A clearer night of nightmares

One of the main shortcomings of the title, in 2015, was that the plot, although it offered interesting ideas, was very superficial since it consisted of some lines of dialogue scattered throughout the various meetings of the Story Mode. This deficiency is well filled by Late [st] thanks to a new modality, the Chronicles mode, which consists of a series of scenarios in the style of Visual Novel, where information will be provided on the characters, the world and the events that are the prologue to Story Mode, renamed Arcade Mode.

This new mode is certainly not the diamond tip of the title, given that in the course of the chronicles mode scenarios it will not be possible to do anything but read, the same clashes between the characters will not be playable. Despite this it is a welcome addition in case you want to learn more the world of Under Night which turns out to be more structured than it might seem from Arcade Mode. The main problem of this new mode is the fluctuation in quality of the scenes: you can find yourself in front of scenes with interesting explanations and characters, even if never particularly original, as you can find yourself having to read for almost an hour useless events and trivial that add little to the world (or that could be summed up in much less).

A complex battle

Chronicles mode is not the only novelty of the new release of the French Bread title, the team is in fact committed to rebalancing the gameplay and adding characters. The roster goes from an original roster of 16 characters to one of 20. The characters are all quite diversified and well balanced, it never seems to be fighting against an enemy against which you cannot win, or at least not when you begin to master the Gameplay of the title.

Under Night in: Birth Exe: Late [st] is not an instant fighting game, one of those titles where finding an exact key combination randomly can lead you to victory.

The Gameplay is particularly deep, thanks also to the presence of a bar called GDR, which fills up every time you score or equal an attack. However, this bar is shared by the two players, when one gains RPG charge the other loses it, so playing too aggressively without knowing how to chain combos capable of breaking the enemy guard is extremely counterproductive. This bar allows not only to be able to fill the EX bar, which can be used to launch deadly combos and enter Vorpal mode by acquiring statistical bonuses, but also to use a special parry that cancels the damage suffered and to use dodging.

If the opponent overfills the RPG bar, your bar will break making you unable to dodge or parry without taking any damage. In addition there is a reduction in the damage inflicted with long-lived combos, it is not possible to kill an opponent with only one long combo memorized, since the longer the combos are the less damage the single hits of those combos will inflict. So it is more useful to know how to chain hits belonging to different combos, or interrupt combos with tricks, cancel and much more.

The game offers a great and long tutorial to learn how to master it, but it requires commitment or experience to be understood to the fullest, moreover the title gives its best just when you play it at its full potential, so it is not exactly suitable for newbies to the genre or to those who don't want to invest too much time.

Where the empty night shines (and where not)

The main driving force behind Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late [st] is the satisfaction that the title gives when you face it at maximum difficulty. Excluding an inexplicably simple Arcade Mode, the other modes, faced with a good knowledge of the gameplay, are structured to give satisfaction, the enemies are aggressive and not to be taken lightly even in the case of playing in single player, this makes the survival modes, score attack, time attack and even the normal Versus are very fun, taking full advantage of the excellent fighting system of French Bread which proves to have grown a lot as a company since the days of Melty Blood.

Obviously it should be emphasized that the game was also designed to be balanced in online battles, and the servers, despite some very sporadic small problems, hold up better than in the past titles of the French Bread company.

The animations of the characters are simple but suitable for the context in which they are found (in an extremely fast fighting game such as Under Night having complex animations could be counterproductive) and the animated sprites are very beautiful and are able to convey the personality of our fighter even without knowing the background thanks to chronicles mode.

The same cannot be said of the character artworks which are much simpler, stereotyped and anonymous compared to animated sprites. Even the arenas in addition to being few (just 19) are also extremely banal and forgettable. The sound sector is different, well suited both in the dubbing and in the accompanying music, with the exception of the music of the main menu.

Summing up, Under Night In-Birth Exe: late [st] is an excellent fighting game, designed for those who have already chewed the genre for some time. It offers satisfaction thanks to well-balanced high difficulties and dynamic but deep gameplay. It is not suitable for newbies because, despite an all in all good chronicles mode, the game loses its charm if you do not take it to greater difficulties or do not aim for the online challenge, where however, being a niche game, they will almost find themselves certainly only the most passionate and capable players of the fighting game genre.
