Dirt 5, developed and published by Codemasters, has finally hit the shelves for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Dirt series now reaches its fifth chapter, completing the clean break with the world of simulation already started with Dirt 4. Forget tweaks and upgrades: the new game that descends from the legendary Colin McRae Rally series he has definitively stripped of his FIA approved suit to opt for something much more comfortable and affordable for everyone. If you are passionate about off road racing, here you will find cars for all tastes, from prototypes with over 900 horsepower to cars from the 80s and 90s, passing through buggies, muscle cars and climbing crawlers. Take all these cars, add ten countries with lots of locations and layouts (over 35) and you have it the most adrenaline-pumping, fun and "muddy" tour that could be created.

Buckle up and get ready to get dirty

The core mode of Dirt 5 is obviously the Career: after the initial tutorial run where you will be called to demonstrate that you can deserve access to the series, you will be directly projected in the choice of events available. Spectacular is crucial in this game: it is not enough to start and win races, you have to complete objectives such as "perform three drifts" or "stay in the lead for a few seconds", in order to unlock additional bonuses at the end of the event. Money and reputation go hand in hand, so always make sure you win races but in a spectacular and fun way, also because winning in itself is not even that difficult. As mentioned at the beginning, the emphasis on simulation has disappeared and the cars of the different categories are all a bit similar in terms of driving feeling. Simply push the accelerator and entertain the audience: this is the recipe for becoming champions.

The good thing is that there is no set path to get to the top: the career is divided into five macro chapters, with the various races divided into countries and vehicle categories. Completing races allows you to unlock new events within each chapter. The better the placement, the more stamps you will earn. A certain amount of stamps is required to unlock each chapter's main event, so always make sure you have the maximum number of event stamps to progress as quickly as possible. Each chapter ends with a Main Event, which is nothing more than a more difficult test to complete than the various races. You need to be on the podium to move on to the next chapter, so get on with it. Winning by getting noticed is essential to attract the attention of sponsors: at the beginning of your career the car's livery will be particularly bare, but if you are good you will soon have a car dressed in many brands. Signing up with a sponsor (there are 20 and they are real, like Monster Energy or Sparco to name a couple) gives the right, in addition to the sticker on the car and various benefits in terms of rewards, to face additional objectives thanks to which the sponsor in question will continue to support you and maintain s with you.

In addition to the career mode, you can run in Free Driving to refine the various techniques and understand the tracks a little, or in Playgrounds mode for maximum fun. Here you can literally build your own path with jumps, obstacles and so on, share it online with your friends and try the tracks built by others. In this sense we are talking about a potentially infinite game, with always different courses and variable difficulty. If, on the other hand, you are fanatic of lap times, the Time Trial mode is the one for you: choose a track, have a time recorded and put it on the online leaderboard.

Multiplayer

Dirt 5 - Review

The multiplayer mode of Dirt 5 is very rich, also because in addition to online it plans to be able to challenge each other locally with your friends in split screen. The gaming experience in this case is decidedly varied and tries to satisfy all types of players: the Party Mode (not the one abolished in the Formula 1 qualifying) provides exclusive arenas where you can compete in different ways against everyone. all. Are you a fan of clean driving even off road? No problem, the “King” mode allows you to keep the crown as long as you avoid collisions with other pilots. Are you in love with demolition derbies and a manhunt behind the wheel of a car? "Vampire" is ideal: you will have to chase (or run away) from the vampire who must take all the other pilots. If, on the other hand, you love to go looking for objects, the “Transporter” mode allows you to find a certain object and take it inside an area to accumulate points. As you can see there is nothing simulation, but finding yourself laughing continuously from the first to the last while driving jumping and rolling over with friends in one of the many alternative modes provided is something really very pleasant.

Graphics and Audio

Dirt 5 - Review

Dirt 5 on X Box One X has respectable graphics, even if frame rate drops are noticeable at different stages of the game. Vehicle modeling is good, even if we have seen better, nevertheless it remains appreciable and enjoyable. The car interiors are quite faithful to the originals and the dirt due to mud, snow and gravel are very faithful to reality. The settings are well defined and characteristic, ranging from Chinese landscapes to Italian marble quarries, passing through deserts or vegetation of South America. The bright and lively colors of the menus can get a bit annoying, so be careful with brightness during calibration. The audio sector is enjoyable, both in terms of music and in terms of differences between the various engine sounds.

Dirt 5 is an arcade game and not only does it do nothing to hide it, it boasts of being one. It is a sincere game, which has nothing simulative and has been conceived only and exclusively to entertain the players and this, honestly, can only please us. There is not only the hard and pure simulation in driving games and the possibility of having two healthy drifting and skidding with friends is always welcome. Despite a few too many flaws in terms of graphics, understandable given the next gen at the gates and the need to balance all the elements offered, the game is always fun and enjoyable. If you are looking for a spectacular and carefree racing title, don't miss it.
