Fear Effect Reinvented is a remastered of the 2000 Fear Effect title. Released as a carbon copy of the previous title Fear Effect Sedna, the original title from Kronos Digital Entertainment was ahead of its time, utilizing a Resident Evil style of gameplay with FMV backgrounds and cel shaded characters tells the story of mercenaries mixed with groups of criminal organizations, all seasoned with atmospheres and references to the supernatural.
Fear Effect Reinvented keeps the camera fixed from the original title by making adjustments to the view control to adapt the game to modern standards. Produced by Square Enixe developed by Sushee the game is ready to land on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
DEVELOPMENT
Released in 2018 the game was announced at Gamescom 2017 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One, French developer Sushee and Square Enix Collective first showed Fear Effect Reinvented, introduced as a complement to the upcoming sequel, Fear Effect Sedna. The title would therefore have maintained a connection with the original game through the particular use of graphic style, cel shaded models, fixed camera angles, but also through updates and improvements of the visual control in order to bring the game in line with modern titles.
Through the Square Enix Collective program, created to help indie developers realize and exploit their ideas, Square Enix assists them in crowdfunding campaigns, promoting and researching the right audience. This allowed developer Sushee to access Eidos's now disused IP, securing consent to use the Fear Effect name and characters.
HISTORY
Hanna and her crew are the first people to appear on the scene when Wee Ming, daughter of a powerful Hong Kong triad boss, goes missing. Our mercenaries weren't hired to find Wee Ming, and they have no reason to be heroes. Their aim is to kidnap the girl to ask for a ransom.
The plot, at first sight linear, takes an unexpected turn when supernatural elements are brought into play, Ming's father, Mr. Lam, turns out to be in contact with demonic entities. Connection that arises from a pact made with demons long ago to obtain power and wealth. It turns out that his daughter is nothing more than a puppet born with the sole purpose of being sacrificed, a sacrifice that Mr. Lam is willing to make to see his goals achieved.
GAMEPLAY
The original charm of Fear Effect was to use the angles of the fixed view, a typical signature of Resident Evil gameplay, the title left its mark during the presentation, making a significant leap in quality through the use of FMV backgrounds rather than still images. Fear Effect Reinvented has remained essentially the same game, benefiting from the benefits given by the technology, the characters are more detailed with a restored light compartment, 3D environments and improved controls.
The player will take on the role of Hanna the team leader, the weapons expert Deke and the cautious mercenary Royce, used during the different phases of the game, all having an identical style and the possibility of using the same weapons.
The strength of Fear Effect is the restored "health system", similar to a heart scanner, it has a green line indicating the player's health status, this will change from green to red when damage is suffered during the various phases of game, but not only fear or tension will also move the indicator and therefore it will be necessary to perform certain actions to "calm" the player and bring the indicator back to green.
The game looks like a classic Survival Horror game with fixed angles, unlike the various Resident Evil the player will be able to move and shoot simultaneously, he will be able to dodge using the roll and shoot two different enemies at the same time using two guns. The game also offers puzzles to solve and areas to be faced using a stealth approach, in fact, stealth kills will be a great way to reduce the player's heart rate.
