If you don't want to create your own sound, TikTok users have access to an in-app music library. Make your sound go viral by making sure the audio is clean, short and unique.

Sounds are central to TikTok. A video paired with the right sound can increase the shareability of your post, and viral sounds can inspire creators across the TikTok community to use your audio in their videos.

When you create videos on TikTok, you can use your own sounds, sounds from other videos, or sounds from TikTok's music library. You can also record a voiceover. Below, we walk you through the different options.

How to make a sound on TikTok

If you'd like to create your own sounds for use in future TikTok videos, you can do so using this workaround in the app. Custom sounds can be a funny voice, a sound effect, a cover of a popular song, or anything else you can come up with.

Open the TikTok app. Touch theplus icon + at the bottom of the screen to create a new video.
Touch the red circle at the bottom of the screen to record a video. This audio will become your custom sound. When you're done recording, tap the again red circle, then tap the red check mark at the bottom right of the screen.
(Optional) Edit the audio recording using the options in the bottom and side panels. You can slow down the audio using the slow-motion effect, crop the audio or add a vocal effect. When done, tap NEXT.
Publish your TikTok by tapping Public.
On the TikTok video, tap the spin record at the bottom right of the screen.
To touch Add to Favorites to use the audio later. Alternatively, tap Use this sound to create a new TikTok video using your custom sound.

How to add a voiceover to TikTok

Whether you're uploading a cooking tutorial or telling your dog's inner monologue, a voiceover can be helpful.

Open the TikTok app. Touch the plus icon + at the bottom of the screen to create a new video.
Record or upload a video, then tap the red check mark at the bottom right of the screen.
On the side panel, tap Voiceover.
Touch or long press to record a voiceover. If you want to keep the original video audio in the final video, make sure the circle next to Keep the original audio is selected. When done, tap Save.
Toccata NEXT, then publish your TikTok.

How to add a sound to TikTok from the in-app music library

If making your own audio isn't your thing, TikTok has a huge in-app music library to choose from.

Open the TikTok app. Touch theplus icon + at the bottom of the screen to create a new video.
Touch the red circle at the bottom of the screen to record a video. When you're done recording, tap the again red circle, then tap the red check mark at the bottom right of the screen.
Tap the icon Sounds at the bottom left of the screen.
Touch to select a sound from the list recommended or touch Other to search for additional sounds.
Touch it snipping tool, then drag the audio clip left and right to select the section you want to include. Tap the red check mark when you have finished.
When you're done adding audio, tap NEXT.
Publish your TikTok by tapping Public.
