As in its predecessors, also in Valkyria Chronicles 4 it is possible to recruit several optional characters by triggering certain conditions, and specifically that certain characters are killed in battle.
From the very early stages of the game you can unlock Eileen Blackwell if Brother Curtis Blackwell is defeated on a mission. Curtis is a scout, so he is capable of covering great distances at each of his turns; this is useful to quickly bring it within range of enemy fire, but it is important not to overdo it, because once it is shot down it is necessary that another companion is nearby to reach it quickly and have it saved by the doctor.
After winning the battle Eileen Blackwell will join Squad E as a new member. Once he is part of the team, Curtis' preferences will automatically change towards Eileen and Laurent, while a potential will be unlocked that will make him inaccurate when his sister is around. Fortunately, it's a potential that can be rectified for the better by completing their side mission.
