Review for Sniper Elite 4. Game for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 14/02/2017 The version for Nintendo Switch came out on 17/11/2020
Sniper Elite 4 developed and edited by Rebellion Developments, lands on Nintendo Switch to free Italy from the forces of Nazi Germany. Released in 2017 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it is the fourth installment of the successful Sniper Elite series. Taking on the role of Karl Fairburne, American secret agent and elite sniper, you will have to search and destroy the MS 300 “Razor”, a radio-guided anti-ship torpedo that could turn the tide of World War II.
The fate of war is in your hands, enclosed in your warfare and ability to adapt to different scenarios. Grab your Nintendo Switch and let's go!
"This is what I trained for: myself, my shotgun and my goal"
If you have already played the version released in 2017 on other platforms, you will not find anything new. L'San Celini Island it is the first stage of an operation which, in the following stages, will be involved even the Italian mafia in the role of collaborator. Deciding the fate of the war sitting on the sofa it is objectively fun, not to mention that the stealth element is definitely a free choice of the player.
Fairburne has a real arsenal at its disposal, not to mention the weapons that you can find in the setting or that you can steal from killed enemies. The advice we give you is to locate the officers as soon as possible which from time to time constitute the main objective of the mission and take them out. Eliminate them, soldiers will be less aggressive, allowing you a better exploration of the maps. Having significantly enlarged the game scenarios compared to Sniper Elite 3, what seemed at times a bare and excessively large environment at first glance, becomes perfect on the small screen of Nintendo Switch.
The possibility of use the Joy-Con gyro to move the view with binoculars or to refine the aim, is the only interesting feature together with the HD Rumble introduced with the Nintendo console, an aspect that in our opinion adds a little more immersion within the gameplay. For the rest it is all the same, perhaps it would have been better to include the DLCs published since the release of the title, would have added further possibilities and would have made the game more attractive.
Let's face it right away: if you bought Sniper Elite 4 on this console, with the aim of playing it on your TV, you made the wrong purchase. Play it in portable mode and you will see that sense of disorientation given by the huge maps in relation to the few elements inserted, it will disappear almost completely. In this respect, Nintendo Switch is the ideal console for this type of game. If you really don't find yourself with Joy-Con, you can use table mode with the Pro Controller but in short, it is a question of taking a little hand and then everything will go smoothly.
Each map contains a number of objects such as letters, keys, registrations of various kinds and much more which will be collected in order to complete each scenario 100%. While completing the mission to advance the story is essentially simple, the story is very different as far as it is concerned secondary objectives: Killing all officers with proximity mines or killing a certain number of enemies with the pistol and no other weapons adds longevity to the game. The same goes for the recovery of objects: very often it will be necessary to beat the map palm by palm to recover, for example, letters or diaries.
Here too the gameplay is varied but the advice we give you is to try different approaches, perhaps going from extreme stealth to massacre with an assault rifle, or using the environment to disorient the enemies and make them fall into a trap. If you think that the gameplay can be repetitive, know that completing missions and objectives by approaching the game in different ways and at different difficulty levels, is far from immediate. The higher levels in fact, make enemies more aggressive and by choosing to simulate bullet ballistics, you will have to take into account many more elements to sniper effectively. If the campaign is not enough for you, survival mode allows you to face the same maps as in history, surviving waves of increasingly aggressive and better armed enemies.
Multiplayer
Sniper Elite 4 on Nintendo Switch offers one Multiplayer (downloadable from Nintendo e-Shop) and the Cooperative mode. The multiplayer allows you to play both online (with 8 players) and in local wi-fi (with 4 players). The game maps are ten in all and are expressly designed for the eight types of game such as Capture the flag, Deathmatch and more. The servers held up well and fun in certain situations is guaranteed.
La Cooperative mode allows you to tackle the entire online campaign together with others 4 players both online and locally. This mode is also very fun and allows you to spend many hours playing with friends, even in the same room.
Graphics and Audio
As already mentioned at the beginning of the review, Sniper Elite 4 for Nintendo Switch is basically the exact same game released on other platforms. The reduced screen that can be used in portable mode slightly masks the level of the settings and scenarios, sparse and unfortunately poor in really meaningful details. Used in fixed mode instead, with the Switch connected to the TV, the problem appears in all its evidence as on PC and on other rival consoles of the red N: interpenetration and inconsistent frame rate are unfortunately obvious problems.
The audio sector is good, the dialogues would be a moment to review but this passes the convent. The sound effects are quite realistic, especially those of the shots and noises of military vehicles, also thanks to the HD Rumble. In principle there is nothing new to say, the advice we can give you is that of use Sniper Elite 4 in portable, the only real reason why it should be purchased for this platform.
Sniper Elite 4 for Nintendo Switch is fun if you love portable gaming, but it remains the classic port made to be able to say that you have made a title available on a particular console. The small screen masks the graphic defects a little, but there are no DLCs (which can be purchased separately or with the Season Pass for 29 euros), there are no major news and the only element implemented to take advantage of the console is the gyro when aiming or observing the battlefield and HD Rumble. Honestly, it seems too little to us, especially for a title that sells for around forty euros. If you love to play portable or if you haven't already played the title on other platforms and can't resist the charm of Sniper Elite, maybe wait for some offer and take it home. In all other cases, pass peacefully on.
