The film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog proved to be a good children's film able to do justice to the historic Sega mascot and to make it known even to those who, at the beginning of the 90s, were not yet born.
The film managed to gross over $ 100 million during its first weekend in theaters, thus becoming the film taken from a video game to have grossed the most over the opening weekend.
Well, thanks to the success obtained (also thanks to the redesign carried out on the protagonist and the presence of the excellent Jim Carrey), a sequel has been in the works for some time, a sequel that now has an official production start date and an expected release date.
The project codenamed "Emerald Hill" (exactly like the first level of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Sega Mega Drive) will see the start of its production period in mid-March 2021, a period that will presumably end around 10 May 2021 and then arrive in cinemas on 8 April 2022.
There are no rumors about the presence of James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz who played the protagonists of the first episode; however we are confident that, given the results of the previous film, the production will do everything to have the entire cast confirmed for the sequel as well.
In case you haven't seen it yet, Sonic - The Movie is included in the Amazon Prime Video subscription.
