Review for SpellForce 3: Fallen God. PC game, the video game came out on 03/11/2020
Within the videogame market some of the role-playing games already in the past have shown that they have something more than the same products belonging to the genre. One example was Pathfinder: Kingmaker, which added management elements to mechanics based on Dungeons & Dragons. Another example is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which allowed the user to choose whether to slaughter every single NPC in the game or - when possible - to solve in more peaceful ways the different problems that could be encountered along the way.
Also SpellForce III: Fallen God fits perfectly into this topic, for reasons that we will talk about here. It is a hybrid role-playing game with characteristics typical of real-time strategy. It was developed by Grimlore Games and published by THQ Nordic on PC as a stand-alone form of downloadable content.
SpellForce III: Fallen God is set fifty years after the Mudblood plague, which brought the New Moon troll tribe to the brink of extinction. The evil in question has in fact not only killed some of the beings, but has also made the few survivors sterile. The tribe's goal is to resurrect a fallen God in order to remove the plague, but it won't be easy at all because the Bones will try to disintegrate what little remains of them.
The story revolves around four trolls, one of which is Nerbok, who will soon become the new tribal chief. In fulfilling this role, Nerbok will find himself defending his people by fighting various bloody battles.
After a very simple creation of the main characters, the start of the campaign throws the player directly into a scenario that aims to explain how the mechanics work. If for some reason SpellForce III: Fallen God should be too complex, the player at any time can check all the items in the appropriate section of the tutorial.
Here you first learn how to manage the team, then to command an entire tribal settlement. You can interact with the environment in several ways: with object containers such as crates, with heaps of resources, or with certain structures. During the fighting it is possible to use the skills of the heroes, obtainable through a simple level-up system that increases thanks to the fulfillment of objectives and quests related to the scenario. Each hero has a certain class, and through it you can learn different skills that will favor the outcome of the battles.
As for the strategic aspect of SpellForce III: Fallen God, there is a structure called Heart of the Tribe that has the task of real central point and control to build the other plants. These include buildings to gather resources or to recruit and specialize army troops. For example, if you build a Fellowship near a forest, the minion workers will automatically provide a steady income of lumber that will be added to the supply, as well as for other resources.
There is also a skirmish mode that you can play with other users or against artificial intelligence. But it doesn't stop there, because the developers together with the launch of the title have decided to release a multiplayer and free-to-play version, called VersusEdition. It also offers skirmish matches against AI, as well as includes a ranked PvP mode.
The product was created through the use of the Script Engine, a graphics engine created independently by Grimlore Games. Great scenarios are built with a view from above, characterized by light colors with a strong predominance of green. Each environment is very, very rich in elements that make the scenarios full.
Nothing to say about companion music, in which the decisive sound of percussion stands out particularly to the ear.
In such a large and complex game it is absolutely normal to encounter small problems. One of them is that the animations are a bit plastic but basically they do not cause excessive annoyance and do not negatively alter the gameplay.
Furthermore - although the adaptation to the language is done quite well - the dialogues in the long run could be quite heavy to read, also due to the enormous amount of information that is instantly explained in the very first moments of the game.
SpellForce III: Fallen God is certainly a very varied and complex game, but through explanations and tutorials it turns out to be easier than expected. The particular hybrid mechanics between RPG and strategy make the title highly interesting. Within the huge product you can find factors that are not exactly made to perfection, such as the animations, which however do not bother the gameplay in any way.
