After a few years of absolute emptiness in the videogame panorama, tennis has finally returned to being part of the sports considered by the developers. When Bigben Interactive announced the Tennis World Tour last year, it was six years since Top Spin 4, a tennis masterpiece available for last generation consoles.

Tennis World Tour - Review

Although Breakpoint Studio, responsible for the development of the title, can boast some former members of 2K Czech among its employees, the result is qualitatively very far from Top Spin 4: Tennis World Tour seems in fact a title released without an adequate period of testing and optimization. Graphically it is closer to a game of the last generation; the only positive point is the fairly plausible realization of the faces of licensed athletes, likelihood that is lost in a fairly similar animation sector for all athletes, except for the management of backhands (with one or two hands), and for the very champion Roger Federer and for our standard bearer Fabio Fognini, although tactically these two athletes have a way of interpreting tennis in a very different way.

The overall construction of the fields is good: despite the lack of official competitions licenses, the major tournaments are immediately recognizable by fans of this sport. Unfortunately all the different surfaces seem to respond in the same way, so there won't be a big difference in the ball's reaction when the ball bounces off clay or synthetic.

The real weakness of Tennis World Tour lies in the playability. For a choice of development, the athlete we are going to check will always strike back at the net; very often our intervention is required only to change the power and direction. This semi-automated trading system has, in my opinion, the flaw of having reduced the level of tactics that has always been present in this sport. The presence of an artificial intelligence with still unpredictable behaviors (despite the release of a couple of patches that have improved the situation) does not help to improve this feeling and makes the Breakpoint title much less satisfying than Top Spin 4.

The Career mode, the main offer for what concerns the single player, is rich and well structured. After the creation through a decent editor (although a few more faces to choose from would have been appreciated) and the choice of the technical characteristics (type of backhand and main hand), our alter ego is launched at the last place in the ranking with objective to climb the ninety-nine positions that separate it from the summit. Our athlete can be improved by tackling training, exhibition matches, purchasing new equipment and participating in tournaments. The results lead to the obtaining of money and experience: with the former we will be able to proceed with the purchase of equipment that will improve one or more characteristics, but slightly worsen some others, and we will be able to take advantage of the services of managers and preparers, also useful they to improve our tennis; with experience, on the other hand, we will increase the level of our athlete by being able to choose to use the development points on three parameters (Attack, Defense, Service-Volée).

The developers said at the launch that in the week of June 12, the day of the release of Tennis World Tour on Nintendo Switch, the game would finally have a online mode, but currently review this mode has not yet been activated: in the online section in the game menu there is, in fact, a very little reassuring "coming soon".

Another point against the Tennis World Tour is the poor implementation of the technical comment by Paolo Bertolucci, commentator of Sky Sport and ex-tennis player: it is limited to a dozen sentences repeated obsessively and even without any sense compared to the play just made ( the commentator complimented him on an excellent backhand when the point was obtained with a forehand).

Tennis World Tour - Review

Tennis World Tour is undoubtedly a big missed opportunity given the shortage of tennis titles in this generation. Graphically backward and stunted by some important modes (double and online), with Top Spin 4 as inspiration, Breakpoint Studio should have achieved a very different result. In the good development of the Career mode, detailed and satisfying, we can see how the developers have potential but launching an incomplete game on the market, asking the public to pay the title at full price, is a choice that cannot (and must not) have. success.
