One of the best ways to combat the frightening heat that is gripping this early summer is surely to fight a tyrannical interplanetary empire aboard gigantic and highly sophisticated combat mechas. War Tech Fighters it is therefore the most suitable title to alleviate the heat wave with missiles and lightsabers.
War Tech Fighters, developed by our own studio Drakkar Dev and distributed by Blowfish Studios, looks like an action / shooter with a very strong arcade connotation.
The game puts us in the shoes of a War Tech pilot, or a gigantic humanoid machine designed for space combat. The faction we are fighting for is a kind of "rebel alliance" of planets and colonies, which is opposed to the powerful and despotic Empire of Zatros, real dominant superpower in that portion of the galaxy.
After the introduction, which catapults us directly (while taking us by the hand in learning the controls) in the heart of one of the countless battles that we will be called to fight, we find ourselves aboard the flagship of our fleet, an environment that acts as a hub for our main activities and which, first of all, we are invited by the game itself to explore freely.
Here we will become familiar with the hangar where our War Tech is housed - and where we can customize and modify it - with the research center and the command center, as well as with the simulator room, where we can take advantage of intensive training programs (read an exhaustive tutorial on all the features of our mecha) as well as re-facing an accurate simulation of the missions that we will have completed.
The War Tech that we will be called to pilot is part of one of the three classes among which we will have to choose at the beginning of the campaign, just after the introductory mission. The classes are divided into light, medium and heavy. The light class, as can be easily understood, has high mobility and a respectable attack arsenal, at the expense of a certain structural fragility. The heavy class, on the other hand, possesses less agility and aggressive power, but can take a large number of direct hits without being seriously affected. Finally, the intermediate class is the classic balanced formula between the other two.
As we have already mentioned, our War Tech is fully modifiable and upgradeable with the technological discoveries and the improved equipment that we will get as we complete the advancements available in the research center. In addition, during the missions, it will also be possible to find and recover blueprints and materials for further improvements.
The missions that we will face in War Tech Fighters take place almost entirely in space, where we can (and will have to) think about our moves in a three-dimensional way, since our mecha will be able to move freely in space, not being tied to any "horizon line".
During the missions we will have to explore the portion of space in which we will find ourselves, analyze asteroids, anomalies and wrecks in search of vital information and resources, defend ships or entire fleets and, of course, engage in combat the enemy vehicles, be they fighters, ships ( more or less impressive) and, of course, War Tech enemies.
The beauty of these real space duels is that, in addition to looking like they came directly from a Gundam-style anime, they have a really fun and equally evocative dynamic: close combat. When we engage or are engaged in a hand-to-hand duel, our War Tech will unleash a futuristic blade worthy of the best mecha souls. With a stick of the pad we will direct the blows, light or heavy they are, while with the appropriate dorsal button we will parry our opponent's copli with the shield, in addition to naturally groped to dodge them.
Having the upper hand, we will see a short animation in the style of "final blow" in which we will generally cut the armor of the enemy with a decisive blow, then causing it to explode, also here in pure "cartoon of robots" style. Even other types of enemies, such as fighters or spaceships, can, after conspicuous weakening, be terminated with a sort of "fatality". This is not essential to the gameplay, but it contributes enormously to creating atmosphere.
War Tech Fighters has been available for PC on Steam for some time and now finally lands on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, in a complete and slightly improved version. Graphics and engine are on an excellent level, with good management of three-dimensional models, collisions and above all the lighting effects. The controls are also well thought out: simple to learn but satisfying to master in, as already mentioned at the beginning, pure arcade style, with the main focus on adrenaline-pumping action. The plot of the campaign is also beautiful and quite engaging, which will develop between the missions and will also reserve some notable twists.
Wanting to find fault with War Tech Fighters, we can mention some confusion on the screen during some missions, also due to the lack of reference points and a certain monotony of the background (on the other hand we are in space!) and a management of the menu commands that, although apparently simple, we have often found uncomfortable and a bit intricate. Nothing fancy, however.
War Tech Fighters is presented as an indie game of great luxury, without having anything to envy to many more "noble" productions. Excellent gameplay, good technical level and the constant references to the atmospheres of the anime of the mecha genre are absolutely the strong points of this highly recommended action title. Try it without fear.
