Writer Herman Melville stated: "It is better to fail in originality than to be successful in imitation. " The dividing line between imitation and shameless plagiarism is ever thinner, it must be admitted, but the Cypriots / Russians AurumDust took this line and crossed it with a tractor.
The graphic style of Ash of Gods: Redemption it is virtually identical to the much better known The Banner Saga and its sequel. The two excellent games developed by the Texans Stoic Studio have in fact provided much more than just inspiration to the developers of this title. The cut-scenes present are very pleasant and well acted by the dubbers.
AurumDust stated that the history and some mechanics of the combat system were already under discussion since 2007, while the actual development started in April 2016, when the first The Banner Saga had almost 2 years of life behind it.
Originality is the best form of rebellion. (Mike Sasso)
Ash of Gods: Redemption is a turn-based strategy, currently available for PC, the developers guarantee that the title will be available by 2018 also on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Switch, with a splash of role-playing game and a pinch of collectible card game mentality .
The gameplay is also very similar to Stoic Studio titles, then classic checkerboard map and turn-based combat, excellent absence of the luck factor and the random assignment of damage. The CCG mechanics are present in the management of the spells, presented here as a deck of cards, each card / spell can only be used once per fight.
In this title we will impersonate three distinct characters, as leaders of groups of survivors of what appears to be an apocalypse in which mankind can be a mere spectator: even in this case of originality not even the shadow. A pity because the game world (here called Terminum) is graphically very fascinating. The dialogues with mature tones, some of which are multiple choice, can be fun, despite the setting of the title being very serious; unfortunately they are also unnecessarily verbose: often in order to characterize more the protagonists of the game, despite the effort produced in the dialogues, we do not stray far from the clichés of the genre.
The positive note of the dialogue system is the possibility that our choices lead our characters to suffer injuries; after suffering four wounds the character in question will die and can no longer be used in the continuation of the adventure, receive additional cards or other effects, both positive and negative.
AurumDust guys are undoubtedly some of the good tradesmen, as the game is perfectly optimized, the animations, made in motion capture, are fluid and the moments of graphic uncertainty are very limited.
A point in favor of Ash of Gods: Redemption is the excellent localization of the texts in Spanish, which is increasingly rare but very important to try to conquer that slice of users not yet accustomed to the Albion language.
Positive mention also for the music of great effect and adapted to the themes of the game, created by Adam Skorupa, Krzysztof Wierzynkiewicz and Michal Cielecki; all with a lot of experience in the field having worked on the soundtracks of titles such as The Witcher, Eve Online and Call of Juarez.
Ash of Gods: Redemption is a strategy game with role-playing and collectible card game elements, with a fascinating but poorly exploited setting, excellently localized dialogues in Spanish but lacking in bite and unnecessarily verbose. Graphically very similar to The Banner Saga series with which it also shares solid and satisfying gameplay. Full enough but no ingenuity effort on the part of the developers. AurumDust has potential and it shows but they have to come up with an original idea. Postpone.
