Monster Hunter Rise was first announced in August, although it most likely didn't plan to announce Monster Hunter Stories 2 during Nintendo Direct itself.

The most recent title in the Monster Hunter franchise was Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. His latest developer diary (the executive / art director Kaname Fujioka and the director Ichihara Daisuke), covered a number of topics and updates for the title in question. Includes Rajang, Layered Armor, a new volcanic region for the Guiding Lands and more. Players also received two new patches (update 11.00 and 11.01), which included bug fixes and balance adjustments among other gameplay improvements.

Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto recently discussed the future of the franchise. “Regardless of the success of Monster Hunter: World, we've always adopted the approach of focusing on two things: action and communication,” says Tsujimoto. “Regardless of what we will work on in the future, I believe it is a basis that we will probably not change. We also understand that we have a larger player base, yet there are still many people who are unfamiliar with the franchise ”.

Altogether Monster Hunter World has sold over 14 million copies, including sales of the recent expansion pack Iceborne. Generally speaking, as far as in-game spin-offs go, Resident Evil 2 arrived on Iceborne in November along with some hilarious costumes from Claire Redfield e Leon Kennedy. Obviously the series has always been pretty cheeky about these things, so it's definitely part of its weird sense of humor.

Monster Hunter World is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The Iceborne expansion is now available on consoles.
