The freedom that the indie world is able to give to developers is a very precious asset since it allows you to create experiences that are sometimes unique. Of course, these are smaller and more contained titles, which are light years away from blockbusters such as Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty. Despite this, however, one would almost say that the former have nothing to envy to the latter precisely because they are little influenced by content or time constraints. Unfortunately, the market is full of examples: just think of the fuss raised by the Final Fantasy XV case. It is also true, however, that we also have many examples of really successful indies, and we are about to talk to you about one of these.
If there is a name that has made good use of this much talked about freedom, it is 11 bit studios, creator of This War of Mine. For those who do not yet know it, it is a survival game set in a nation at war in which instead of experiencing the conflict through the eyes of a soldier, the player is given the opportunity to play civilians. In short, living the war from the point of view of ordinary ordinary people: how is it that nobody had ever thought of it?
This War of Mine can currently be purchased on a number of platforms and its first release dates back as far as four years ago, in 2014. Like many independent titles, however, the initial success has allowed developers to refine and expand. further their creature which, to be precise, has not yet finished evolving. The version for Nintendo Switch, called This War of Mine: Complete Edition, is therefore the summary of four years of product life concentrated in a single package, which will also include the DLCs that will be published in the future. The price at which it is proposed is also reasonable, € 39.90, and is available in both digital and physical versions.
Why are we talking about price? Well because when these reissues are made, price is always a divisive argument. Some might say that the title has four years on its back and that it is also available on iOS and Android, where it has a lower price. Theoretically valid arguments, but which actually leave the time they find because, in fact, The 2018 This War of Mine is actually a much more refined product than it was four years ago. In addition, the package also includes all current and future DLCs, to expand the experience to new and engaging horizons.
This War of Mine: Complete Edition then seems to have found its perfect home on the Nintendo Switch, partly because the Japanese company seems to treat independent developers particularly well and partly because the user base is solid, buys many titles and proves to be well disposed towards porting even late. Furthermore, the structure of the game is well suited to the hybrid nature of the Japanese console as it alternates management phases and action sessions. During the day, the player will be asked to manage the house where a handful of survivors have taken refuge. This therefore means managing supplies, medicines, heating as well as the creation of new tools and complex human s. The night will instead be the time dedicated to exploring the city of Pogoren to find everything you need.
The exploration phases begin with the selection of one of the survivors of the house, who possess peculiar characteristics and abilities. Once this is done, you will have to prepare properly as the city of Pogoren is far from welcoming. The conditions of the population are in fact desperate and the threats come not only from the armies but also from the citizens themselves. The struggle for supplies is always around the corner, but this does not mean, however, that you can meet friendly characters and with whom to establish beneficial ties and alliances. The game then offers two different approaches to its gameplay: one more immediate thanks to the survival mode, one oriented towards narration. If in the first case we play for pure fun, in the second we will have very specific plots called “Stories” as the guiding thread. Our advice is therefore to make your bones with some survival games and then move on to the stories and fully enjoy what happens on the screen.
The structure chosen by 11 bit studios is that of a 2D side scroller with polygonal graphics. Great approach, which makes night sessions easier to manage. Of course, the control system sometimes presents some uncertainty, but once you get used to it, everything runs smoothly. From the visual point of view then, This War of Mine: Complete Edition is presented as a dark, oppressive and rough work, which despite the polygonal simplicity of the environments and characters is able to make believable what the player will face. The conversion on the Nintendo Switch was therefore carried out without too many hitches, even if some uploads are a bit indigestible.
With this Complete Edition, This War of Mine has finally reached its full maturity. It is in fact an engaging title, well made and which manages to convey a wide range of emotions in its small way. Telling the war as the population was a winning idea and a great way to make the gameplay more varied. This edition also includes all past and future DLCs, so its longevity is more than abundant.
