Two years have passed since the release of AO Tennis, a title developed by Big Ant Studios and fans of this sport can finally compete on Australian clay in AO Tennis 2. The title, as the name suggests, takes the player to the Australian Open, one of the most important competitions of this discipline.
AO Tennis 2 is not a triple A title like the canons FIFA or NBA 2K and the flaws of the game are clearly evident, in particular those concerning the graphic aspect. By purchasing the sports title of Bigben Interactive one certainly cannot expect an amazing accuracy in the "reconstruction" of real tennis players or photorealistic graphics, but if the goal is purely to play Tennis, it is a guaranteed success even for a neophyte. AO Tennis 2 in fact has a rather wide offer from the point of view of playable modes and above all, it is very accessible.
You can decide to participate in the ordinary Australian Open tournament, accompany a famous tennis player - even a personalized one - in a long and flourishing career or face some other player in the multiplayer modes.
From a playful point of view, AO Tennis 2 is well thought out and fun, despite the presence of some harmless but fairly repeated, graphic glitches. The presence of a self-rescue system that works optimally and in fact ensures the player does not have to repeat anything is important: it is present and active during each set and considering that these are not short games, it is an important protection from having to repeat the game from the beginning. Although the game is not high-budget, it is well balanced and is certainly to be rewarded thanks to the presence of the scalable difficulty that adapts the game to every need.
Starting AO Tennis 2 for the first time, you can see that it is set to “amateur” and this is probably the difficulty that would have been used the most according to the development team. Playing at this difficulty, at the expense of what the term suggests, the challenge is satisfying. You can roughly calculate the intensity of the beat - but also of all the other strokes - by means of a sort of traffic light: it is however clear that once you have acquired experience it is preferable to increase the difficulty. It is in fact at the highest difficulties that the differences emerge in facing a tennis monument such as Nadal (official testimonial of the game) or lesser known players. The difference is perceived and is certainly a sign of the good balance that can boast the title of Big Ant.
As for the career mode - certainly one of the contents on which the title focuses most - there is the possibility of creating your own tennis player from scratch. Once the name has been assigned, you can take advantage of a character editor which, while not the best around for variety, is simple and intuitive. The feeling you get as you progress game after game is satisfying; A tennis player created from nothing grows professionally and who, initially without even sponsors, manages to obtain the interest of the public and the press (also based on the two poles of sporting morality that can be exercised during the sets).
Despite the legitimate graphic limitations, it must also be considered that an excellent job has been done in the management of motion capture and facial expressions, especially on the great protagonists of this sport - just see the same Ash Barty or Rafael Nadal to realize it - but the result is also decent. from a more general point of view.
AO Tennis 2 is definitely a pleasant game to play that creates a good atmosphere in the match, although some details leave something to be desired. This is clearly a title that will blossom thanks to the support of a strongly passionate community and that will be able to give its best in the multiplayer sector. For the moment, the result achieved by Big Ant Studios is to be rewarded, also because seeing a non-AAA sports game well made - net of the defects that can be found - is certainly a pleasure.
