The ASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM is the new monitor that joins the TUF range and is the first monitor in the world with 280 Hz refresh. Before taking a closer look at the technical characteristics, let's try to make a general overview: the packaging is the classic rather bulky box that contains the 27 "monitor, the metal pedestal that fits directly to the adjustable arm, the base also metal, power cord and an HDMI cable.
All rigorously wrapped in the best way, as quality ASUS requires.
At first glance it looks like a linear and simple monitor despite being a product intended for gaming. By now we are used to seeing them in all colors: between LED frames, rear and side holograms with every kind of gadget possible and imaginable, having a monitor in front of you that looks like a simple display in all respects, leaves you pleasantly struck. However, simplicity is not to be confused with poor quality: the materials are excellent, the solidity of the arm and base is exceptional and the rubber feet underneath the latter literally block theASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM at the desk. Everything is where it needs to be, interacting with the monitor is easy and intuitive and the internal menus are easy to use. The rear friezes recall the ASUS graphics of gaming products, the only real "quirk" that the company has provided for this product. Being very simple in terms of design and ergonomics, the monitor can be implemented in many environments and certainly does not look bad in a studio or in an elegant office. We repeat it again: it is not the classic gaming product, and soon we will also see why.
Specifications
THEASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM it is a 27 ”flat monitor with a good level of connectivity. In fact, in the back we find a DisplayPort, two HDMI ports, one USB and an audio output. Note that the USB does not have the "charge" function therefore you cannot use it to recharge for example headphones or smartphone. The rotation of the arm allows a 90 ° rotation horizontally and vertically, while the height adjustment is allowed by a track that allows you to raise and lower the monitor as needed. The audio compartment consists of two 2W speakers each which, despite guaranteeing an overall acceptable audio, certainly do not claim to be at the level of much more noble and expensive products.
The display ofASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM it's a IPS with 1920 × 1080 resolution, response time of 1 ms e refresh time of 280 Hz maximum. The display area size 567.6 x 336.15 mm and has a brightness of 400 thread. Before continuing, a clarification must be made: reaching the fateful 280 Hz is a goal reserved for machines that have a decidedly powerful VGA. Furthermore, if you prefer the level of detail to the pure and simple size of the screen, it is certainly better to go down in size, perhaps opting for a 24 ”which, coincidentally, costs more.
In addition to being equipped withASUS Fast IPS, which allows higher velocities for liquid crystals, theASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM is equipped with theASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB), a proprietary technology that allows the Motion Blur Reduction (MBR) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) to work at the same time, implementing a synergy that drastically improves the image. On a purely conceptual level, the ELMB uses stroboscopic LEDs as a backlight, activating and deactivating individual pixels with the addition of the so-called “black frame insertion”, a black frame that reduces motion blur. VRR, on the other hand, allows the monitor to vary the refresh rate as needed. Support for nVidia is also guaranteed G-Sync and HDR 400.
The test
THEASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM it is a small concentrate of technology that works all in all well and is always ready to optimize everything you ask it to project. Clearly, even here, we certainly cannot expect the level of definition of a smaller monitor. From this point of view, unfortunately, we find that 27 ”is a dimension not very suitable for this product range. It is certainly not the fault of ASUS, but to those players who are still convinced that "bigger is better".
Despite this, theASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM however his and, on games like Monster Hunter World or The Witcher 3 (modded), the difference compared to other products you can see it all right: the colors are sharp and quick tonal changes never give the impression of being able to decompose the color range at any moment. If you are into graphics or video editing and want to buy this monitor, prepare the colorimeter because the settings set by default are very good in the gaming field, but otherwise require a bit of fine-tuning. On the other hand, it is a monitor designed for gaming and not for other uses.
As mentioned in the review, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG279QM is undoubtedly a good product. The fact is that 400 euros for a Full HD monitor are objectively a lot of money. Let's put in the support at 280 Hz, but it is still a monitor that, at times, seems to create too many artifacts if you press the accelerator. The lack of the USB charge port is not a negligible detail right now and, for all these reasons, we do not feel like recommending its purchase unless you intend to use it in eSports: in that case, the update speed and the fluidity of the image are definitely of a high standard. For all other uses, choose other products.
