Spectacular: This was the key word used to describe Devil May Cry at the time of its release back in 2001. At a time when three-dimensional games were still looking for their own winning formula, Hideki Kamiya pulled a title out of his hat. who created his own formula. Nowadays though having the same impact on the gamer for a title like Devil May Cry HD Collection is more complex mainly because of the later works of his own "father".

Despite this Capcom has decided to revive the original trilogy of Dante's adventures on the current generation through a remastered edition, perhaps in order to test the waters for a possible sequel, perhaps to complete the circle by making the entire saga available on the console of current generation and PC. With a good job of remastering it is possible to overcome the problems that aging a game entails, but this unfortunately does not happen in the Devil May Cry HD Collection.

Devil May Cry HD Collection - Review

The collection of Dante's adventures in Devil May Cry HD Collection is essentially very lazy. The 3 titles are re-proposed in an excellent 16: 9 with 1080p resolution, in an improved version compared to the collection for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but these improvements are limited only to the game phases. Anything other than the level of play itself has been left as it was in the original titles. So you have videos in very low resolution CGI, video in game graphics with horizontal black bands and even Menus in 4: 3 with resolution from PlayStation 2. The presentation of the levels is certainly very pleasant and can boast a granite framerate, but the laziness demonstrated from Capcom in every other sector makes it difficult to justify the price of this renewed edition.

Some of these non-remastered aspects are indeed even evidently worse than their Playstation 2 counterparts, due to warped images in some videos and an aliasing effect that spoils the colors. The latter is not only reflected on the cut-scenes but also on a couple of missions of the third chapter of the saga. Obviously, as Capcom's behavior on the technical side already suggested, there are no improvements of any kind in the 3 games. None of the small flaws - some even easily remedied - that the games bring with them have been fixed or compensated for by a few small changes. The only positive note from this point of view is the presence of the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 3, which therefore brings with it the rebalancing of the infernal difficulty of the third chapter of the series. Being a remaster and not a remake, no one asked Capcom the impossible, no one asked the company to make Devil May Cry 2 a masterpiece, but a few small additions to make the titles more enjoyable more than 15 years later would certainly have been appreciated.

Devil May Cry HD Collection - Review

Fortunately, the extremely negative balance so far clears up when we are able to talk about the impact that titles can have on players after 2 generations. Leaving aside the second title which we will talk about later, Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 3 remain enjoyable even in 2018, even after playing Platinum Games titles. The first game brings with it some ailments, such as a couple of uncomfortable boss-fights to fight, or some fixed shots that are not always perfect, but it remains an excellent action. The controls are still fresh, the combos remain spectacular and satisfying to do. Note on the atmosphere that even after 4 chapters plus a reboot, remains the best of the franchise.

However, what surprised us most was the rediscovery of Devil May Cry 3. After the launch of Bayonetta 2, which took place less than a month ago, it is difficult for any action title to be able to stand out if you go to compare the two games. This is not true of Dante's Awakening, however. Thanks to the Special Edition, which fixes the exaggerated difficulty imbalance of the title, it will be possible to play a pearl that remains so even more than 10 years after its release. The combos are fluid, spectacular and varied; the enemies are few in variety, but well balanced to provide a never banal challenge; a great soundtrack; a story as simple as it is epic e all accompanied by some of the best bosses the genre can boast.

Too bad, therefore, that the CGI videos, which portray battles with spectacular choreography, are ugly to see due to Capcom not bothering to remaster the cut-scenes as well.

Devil May Cry HD Collection - Review

The only title left open is Devil May Cry 2: the black sheep of the series. On some occasions it is possible to re-evaluate some titles of the past thanks to remastered, this because maybe they were not suitable for the period in which they came out: Metal Gear Solid 2 and Zelda Wind Waker are striking examples. This positive revaluation, however, does not fit Dante's second adventure. The title is much slower and more banal than the previous one, the combos have been significantly reduced, as well as the weapons that also share a large part of their moveset.

If in 2003 one could at least appreciate the enormous graphic improvement of the title, in 2018 and with a poor remaster it is no longer possible to do so. The Devil May Cry HD Collection therefore ends up penalizing this chapter above all, which not only continues to be the worst of the series, but loses its main strength due to the aging of the game. To all this is added a partial localization of the game, which will be half English.

Devil May Cry HD Collection - Review

Capcom's commercial maneuver is questionable from many points of view, and his work on this collection cannot be considered sufficient. Despite this, the Devil May Cry HD Collection reaches the sufficiency thanks to the incredible quality of the first and third chapter that are still up to the best titles in the action scene. Different speech for Devil May Cry 2 that continues not to convince. For anyone wishing to discover or replay the series, the collection is suitable, but not as good as it could have been with a more complete remastered work.
