Fortnite - Review

Review for Fortnite. Game for PC, Mac, Android, iOS, PlayStation Network, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 25/07/2017 The version for Nintendo Switch came out on 12/06/2018

Although at the epic Games many players still care about the Unreal shootings or the locust war of Gears of War, one day came the announcement of Fortnite: a project currently available for a fee in Early Access, but that will become a free to play free in 2018.

Strange and intrigued, we then launched the fight against the abject, then let's find out if Epic Games is destined to conquer the free to play market.

The calm before the storm

An event that has never happened before has turned the earth upside down, a storm that brought humanity close to total extinction, as one of the few survivors left, we will find refuge in a research base. To welcome us we will find some nice flying robots who will appoint us commanders of the resistance, and it will be our task to help the heroes left in the battle against the storm, guilty of generating abject (subspecies of zombies) that infest the world.

From our periscope we will take control of a hero and launch into battle against creatures.

The game system is quite simple, there will always be a key point to defend against waves of enemies, that mission after mission will become more numerous and varied. The playful offer is therefore managed around a sort of tower defense, the peculiarity is that we ourselves will build our defenses through a crafting system: therefore each mission will be divided into a phase of reconnaissance and collection of materials, the construction of defenses and the fight against the abject.

Despite the possibility of playing with three other random companions from the network or from friends, the concept of the game tries to mix elements already seen in other titles in a new formula, to some Fortnite reminded Orcs Must Die, to others even Left 4 Dead.

In our opinion, the formula chosen by Epic Games in the early stages is light and pleasant, but the absence of other types of games flattens what good we have tried to build, making it a pleasant title in small doses.

Furthermore, after the initial tutorial you will surely feel displaced by the amount of notions and contents to master: two different skill trees (one to manage with points obtainable after a mission, others with points that are earned over time), pots that offer rewards, survivors to find and organize into groups, different heroes to manage, weapon projects, traps and much more.

In this chaos of chests, cards and points, what you will probably be interested in is just playing, and after spending thirty minutes in the menus to understand how a weapon is produced (because weapons break and you have to craft or find them), the match it will last a short quarter of an hour and you will have found yourself a bit confused, without any satisfaction.

This is because Fortnite does not pose a real challenge (and here you can see the flaws of free to play) but a repetitive structure, huge trees of skills to be completed, tasks to be completed and small videos of the conclusion of the mission, in which obviously the progress of the narration stumbles without finding any kind of outlet.

Taming the storm

Fortnite looks like a classic TPS with a control system without infamy and without praise, the arsenal is divided into different weapons: from pistols to automatic rifles, passing through explosives. All the guns return a discreet feeling and there are also weapons for hand-to-hand combat. As we said earlier every offensive tool will wear out over time and the best ones will greet us after a couple of matches, a choice that on paper weighs down the gameplay rather than deepening it

The phase of collecting materials and exploring the map is quite simple, in practice we will be able to destroy almost all the objects present in search of components, and there will be small secondary tasks to save survivors: we are mostly talking about finding an object that convinces the survivor to join us.

Editing is certainly pleasant and intuitive, although not very deep. We won't be able to build anything that comes to mind, but we will have ready-made pieces that we can use: walls, floors, ramps and pyramids. It will be possible to modify these pieces for different purposes, for example by removing the central areas of a wall we can add a door.

Important in the construction is the addition of traps, from retractable spikes to spikes to stop the abject, passing through electrical devices. All these tools will be craftable and improvable in the menus (there are cards to improve any element of the game, from characters to traps).

Finally, the combat phase will see us manage waves of enemies from one or more cardinal points, everything is random, map and direction of the attack; however, there was no lack of repetitions, for example all the hordes of abject arriving from a single direction.

Before each mission we will enter a room where we will be automatically added to other players, online games with random people become a ruckus of people running around, breaking everything like in a rave party. Only on a few occasions have we managed to coordinate decently to decide when to start the defense, our impression is therefore that Fortnite expresses its potential with friends.

After the storm

Graphically Fortnite presents itself with a pleasant cartoon aspect, which sufficiently characterizes the characters. The abject, for their part, are very reminiscent of the undead in Plants VS Zombies and the most particular enemies (for example a abject in a baseball suit who will throw bones at us) will be added with a dropper during the missions.

Good sound, especially with the English dubbing of the assistant robots, only note of pleasant color in the purple dish of the storm.

We do not know why Epic Games has focused so much on Fortnite, the premises were good, but the title lacks its full originality. Fortnite looks like a smoothie of interesting ideas mixed with carlona. Everything must find a meaning under the boulder of free to play, which slows down the game formula, progress and gameplay that is also pleasant, but slow in its progress. Given its price in the future you could also try it and have fun for a few hours, perhaps with friends, but you will hardly ever see the end of the storm, from that Epic Games seems to have never come out of it.
