theIndiana University announced that it will delay the second phase of expansion of its super computer Crey Shasta "Big Red 200" to specifically wait for the next generation of nvidia graphics cards.
They originally planned to equip the system with graphics Tesla V100, but "the opportunity that presented itself made us lean towards waiting a little longer and updating with the new Nvidia technology". Simply put, the University researchers will have 2 Petaflop with additional performance by purchasing fewer GPUs. This is because, thanks to the new generation of GPUs equipped with Ampere chips, the increase will be from 70% to 75% more than the current offer, as stated by Brad Wheeler, vice president of the computer section of the University.
Everything suggests that Ampere GPUs will be unveiled in March at GPU Technology Conference by Nvidia. This also indicates that NVIDIA will be the first to introduce the new architecture for the HPC market, a sector not to be underestimated and always interesting to analyze.
Currently "Big Red 200" is equipped with AMD processors Epyc 7742 and therefore future Nvidia GPUs. Epyc 7742 is the flagship model of AMD as for the Zen 2 CPUs, so this model has 128 threads and a base clock speed of 2,25 GHz.
