Have you ever read a sentence, see an image, hear news and simply ask yourself "Why"? We did, the last time when we found ourselves reviewing Rogue Trooper Redux, a third-person shooter developed by TickTock Games recently landed on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Rogue Trooper, however, is actually a production dating back to 2006, at the end of the PlayStation 2 life cycle then, and even then it was a discreet title but nothing more. This “Redux” is therefore a remake / remaster, which leaves the narrative and content component almost intact, concentrating rather on improving graphics and, in part, the controls. To what purpose then to resurrect an ancient product that did not have much of that peculiar base? … Mystery of faith (videogame)!
Rogue Trooper tells the story of a handful of genetic soldiers, mass-produced creatures in the laboratory whose existence is devoted solely to eradicating the Norts threat from the planet Nu-Earth. The sexy blue men are then trapped in a very violent war, an infinite loop of events where the only way out is death. The player will play Rogue, a geneticist who, thanks to the sacrifice of his teammates, manages to turn into a real war machine. But if you were expecting dark atmospheres, existential questions and dramas well, Rogue Trooper Redux is not for you: the atmosphere that reigns throughout the game is that typical of action films of the 80s where machismo, supposed epicness and sarcastic jokes are almost all of what your ears will hear. Are you allergic to all of this? Then stay away from this remake because apparently it's not your thing.
Our interview with the development team at EGX
At the time of its release, Rogue Trooper could count on the novelty effect of the cover system, one of the first to make its debut on consoles, but even then it was far from perfect or efficient. For this remake the guys from TickTock Games have tried to modernize everything but with poor results. Redux exudes 2006 from all pores, demonstrating the inadequacy and imprecision in the controls of that time, so much so that not even the changes made are able to prevent some unpleasant episodes. In fact, there are delays in the reactivity of the character, who sometimes does not enter cover promptly, thus collecting more bullets than he should; or there is the new aiming system that should bring the game closer to modern standards but which, due to its imprecision, will make you sweat a lot to frame certain parts of the enemy's body. This will often cause ammo to be wasted which will result in increased player frustration.
Artificial intelligence is also the daughter of the early 2000s, which demonstrates all the weight of the years that it carries with it on more than one occasion. In fact, the enemies are not very reactive, stupid, real bullet-absorbing sponges that at higher difficulty levels they do not change so much their attack pattern, but rather the amount of energy possessed and damage inflicted. Features that might have been tolerable in 2006 and on PlayStation 2, definitely not anymore.
On the average, however, the system of character growth and skill acquisition. As our companions are killed or we come across their corpses, we will acquire their skills through the neuro chips that every genetic soldier is equipped with. However, these do not only contain the abilities but also the personalities of the subjects themselves, so much so that a sea of voices will crowd the poor Rogue's head and, consequently, also that of the player. Voices that are nice the first 5 minutes, then you just want to make them shut up so as not to have to hear yet another pun with a war-muscular background. The behavior of the online modes is totally unknown: we were unable to start games due to a lack of players and we therefore postpone our evaluation until it will be possible to play in multiplayer.
The most interesting part is the graphics, which is also the element that has undergone the greatest restoration. The polygonal models of the protagonist and supporting actors are well cared for, resulting in a riot of sexy pectorals, a profusion of six packs, flexed biceps and packs on display, while the settings have seen an increase in the resolution of the textures and a certain care regarding special effects, lighting system and visual cleaning. Too bad for the animations, clumsy and unnatural, anchored too, like the whole gameplay, to that nostalgic and now distant 2006.
Rogue Trooper Redux is a title from which much more could be gained. The work done by the developers does not satisfy at all and indeed, almost worsens what already existed in the original version. Patches have been applied a little everywhere to make the game look a little more current, but the result is not convincing as a much more massive restoration was needed. In the end, a little bit sorry because the setting is interesting and, for once, it's fun to play as muscular and sexy blue hunks half naked, dirty and sweaty from start to finish. But certainly this will not be enough to revive the fortunes of Rogue Trooper Redux, a third-person shooter that can be safely skipped.
