In a long interview with Nikkei's Xtech, the designer of Sony, Otori Yasuhiro, explained the reason for the size of PlayStation 5, revealing as the decision of Sony is derived from the choice of using a large fan on the card to reduce the difficulties of use and lower costs.
The main person in charge of the team that designed the mechanical and thermal components of the PlayStation 5 revealed:
It would have been possible to make PlayStation 5 to make it smaller. For example, by implementing two fans for the cooling system, one for side A and one for side B, this would reduce the size.
The designer continued: “This would have led to an increase in the costs of having two fans. Also, checking the functionality of two fans is more difficult than checking one. These additional obstacles that we evaluated, made us decide to cool both sides of the main board with a large fan ».
