Acer Humanity is a global initiative promoted by Acer to make the world a better environment by bringing its ecosystem closer to the human-centered values of the company. Under the umbrella of this initiative, Acer has launched several programs around the world to restore value to communities and the environment.
This year the focus has been on education and the environment, areas where Acer has already made a difference. That's why Acer For Education launched a competition among Acer Innovative Schools in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in October to encourage students to develop a positive, community-focused approach and experience the importance of engaging in “green” activities. The projects presented were evaluated on the basis of the number of ecological activities involved and their originality. Additionally, the winning schools will be able to help support the learning path of an educational charity of their choice by awarding 10 Acer devices each.
The winning schools were announced during the Teachers Advisory Council which took place in November in Barcelona. Let's take a closer look at the winning schools and their projects.
Escolaglobal involved 5-year-olds in a project to learn about recycling and reuse in fun and creative ways. The children made pencil holders and other items out of used plastic bottles, then sold their artifacts. The proceeds from the sale, together with the prize, went to support two disadvantaged schools in Tarrafal, Cabo Verde, as part of the Semear Futuro project. The project taught young pupils the importance of recycling plastic to prevent it from polluting the oceans, giving disadvantaged students the hope of a better future through easier access to knowledge.
Selborne Primary School was awarded for its comprehensive approach to sustainability and environmental issues. With solar panels, water collection tanks and recycling bins throughout the campus, the school develops the concept of eco-friendliness in every aspect of its daily practices, thus showing its young pupils the benefits of recycling and the use of renewable energy sources. Buluga Primary School, a school located in a rural area, will receive Acer devices and the ability to connect to the vast online world, to access opportunities that their isolation would otherwise have denied.
The New English School has a historic commitment to raising awareness of environmental issues. Keeping the soil free of waste, reducing the use of materials whose waste is destined for landfill, reusing materials where possible and recycling what can be economically reprocessed are some of the activities carried out by students. For this project, the New English School partnered with the Direct Aid charity so that the award went to disadvantaged students in Africa.
An honorable mention goes to Szkoła Podstawowa n. 2, Poland, which will also receive a special award for charitable and multicultural activity which consists in encouraging online communication between their pupils and their peers in Uganda and providing them with school materials.
