As we all know by now, ASUS is used to renew the playful video entertainment sector by introducing new peripherals every year, as well as new hardware components. During Gamescom 2019 we had the opportunity to try all the new products of the ROG family that will come out this year, including the ROG Chakram mouse that we have already reviewed, many monitors with 4K 144 Hz resolution with DSC and the new ROG Strix Go 2.4 headphones . As you could understand from the title of this article, today we are here to talk to you about Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4, a gaming headset that already struck us in Cologne for its versatility and that in the review phase convinced us completely.
The package that encloses the headset recalls the style of what has already been seen in previous products belonging to the ROG family. The predominant colors are black and red. On the front we find an image of the headset, the name of the product, the Hi-Res Audio certification, the full support for Nintendo Switch and the certifications for Teamspeak and Discord.
In the back we find all the main features, such as the ultralight weight of Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4, all the technical data of the drivers and the microphone and the various types of connections. The contents of the package are extremely complete and worthy of a headset of this price. In addition to the headset we find a practical hard case to store the headphones when we carry them, the USB type C dongle with its adapter to USB A, a 4-pole jack cable to connect the headphones to any traditional audio device and a USB A - USB C cable to recharge the batteries or to connect in mode Wired, in short, we find everything we need to make the most of them with any device.
If you have not understood, Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 is a Wireless type headset but which can also work via cable, both USB and traditional audio jack. The dongle is compatible with virtually any product we tested: PC, Mac, iPad, Android Smartphone, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Where the compatibility of the dongle does not arrive we can take advantage of the old analog connection with 3,5 mm jack, obviously losing the convenience of wireless.
When we think of the ROG brand, we immediately think of top products, but also aesthetically very eye-catching and immediately recognizable. For Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 this is not the case. The design turns out to be very minimal, but very elegant and able to adapt to any situation, whether we are using them at home, on the train, on the plane or around while walking. The headphones are built entirely of black plastic, but well made, which gives the headphones an extremely low weight. The headband, that is the part where our big head will rest, is made of brushed aluminum, extremely light and flexible.
Both earpads enjoy extremely generous dimensions, so that they completely envelop the ear, all without exerting excessive pressure, so that you can use the Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 for several hours without any pain. In the left pavilion we find the ROG logo engraved, while in the right one we find the iconic eye, the undisputed symbol of Asus' enthusiast line. Inside each pavilion we will find gods pads heavily padded and covered with synthetic leather, extremely comfortable, but which with high temperatures will cause us to sweat excessively. The part of the headband that will come into direct contact with our big head will also be covered with fabric.
In the left pavilion we also find two jacks from 3,5 millimeters, one to connect the detachable microphone and one to connect the headphones via cable. Here we also find a switch, which also has the function of turning on and off, to select the mode of use if Wi-Fi or with cable, a practical wheel to adjust the volume that if pressed will deactivate the microphone and a button for multimedia commands.
On the right pavilion we find instead a USB type C port with which to recharge the headphones or simply use them in Wired mode via USB cable. Although Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 is a gaming product, it does not have any type of RGB LED, in order to favor a high autonomy.
The headset is of the stereo type and inside the pavilions we find two 0 mm drivers composed of neodymium magnets. They are capable of achieving one impedance of 32 ohm, with a response frequency that varies depending on the mode used: via Wi-Fi Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 is able to reach the frequency of 20 KHz, while with 3,5 mm audio jack of 40 KHz. In both modes we will find the Noise Cancellation, or the suppression of external noises, so as not to be disturbed by external sources, such as your mother who yells at you to study or the employer who requires you to work.
On Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 we find not only one microphone but two. One resides in the left pavilion and will only activate if we have not connected the boom microphone. The first, of the bi-directional type, is useful when we will use the headphones on the move, while the removable one, of the omnidirectional type, is suitable when we will use the headset for our online games, so that our companions in arms can hear us at the better. On a technical level they are almost identical: both have a sensitivity of about -54 dB and a response frequency that varies from 100 to 8000 Hz.
We tested Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 with different devices, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 Pro, Xbox One X and PC. The audio was immediately of excellent quality, with a crystal clear sound, an excellent directional and with not too marked bass. The headphones, however, gives the best of itself via PC, because here is the Armory Create software where we can go to modify the equalization, create various profiles and also enable the virtualization of Surround 7.1, in order to have an even more immersive audio . The audio of the microphones is of excellent workmanship, our companions in arms will be able to hear our voice clearly without any background noise.
Given its type, the bidirectional microphone, placed in the left pavilion, will capture any sound from any direction, therefore not exactly ideal if used in noisy environments. The battery managed to provide us with a decent autonomy, about 23 hours before completely discharging them and, thanks to the fast recharge, with about 15 minutes of charge, we were able to continue our games for about 3 hours, really not bad especially if we find ourselves travelling.
Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 proved to be a truly versatile headset, able to make us enjoy our games to the fullest, even if we were on the move. The audio is definitely of a high level and manages to give clear and crystalline sounds and above all with little marked bass, so as not to overwhelm the other frequencies. If you want to put your hand to the equalizer, you can change it to your liking using the dedicated PC app. Compatibility is almost total and where the USB dongle does not work, as on Xbox, you can use the 3,5mm jack cable that you find in the equipment. The small size, the not particularly excessive weight and the excellent longevity of the battery make Asus ROG Strix Go 2.4 an excellent travel companion.
If you are looking for a wireless gaming headset, which you can take anywhere and are not scared by the price of around 180 €, Asus ROG Strix GO 2.4 could be just for you!
