Dualense is the word that echoes most of all among Sony PlayStation fans. The last generation of consoles saw a large preference of the Microsoft controller over the Sony counterpart, however in the next generation the Japanese company will be able to count on a brand new controller like the DualSense. The starting point was obviously the DualShock 4, but it's not just a trivial restyling: the device, which focuses more on immersion and "a sense of touch" through improved tactile feedback and adaptive triggers, presents a number of features that could lead Sony to come back ahead of Microsoft.
So let's see some fundamental features implemented by Sony, which would make the DualSense a more interesting choice than the Microsoft pad.
Adaptive Triggers
Adaptive triggers could easily be a brilliant marketing gimmick or an innovative idea to the point of making them a real standard for controllers of the future. Thanks to the adaptive triggers, in fact, players will presumably be able to try different levels of feedback given by the keys based on the actions they are performing within the game, a common example is that of pulling the string of a bow to shoot an arrow. This feature further increases the immersion that the DualSense controller can offer. It's impossible to know if developers will benefit from this feature and how useful it will actually be, but according to comments from Pete Hines of Bethesda, it appears that adaptive triggers constitute one impressive novelty and that their implementation in video games will allow for great things.
"Create" button
Let's say right away that Xbox Series X will have a "Share", Just like Sony did on the DualShock 4. In this new generation of consoles, Sony has taken another step forward by implementing the"Create“, Giving players the opportunity to create game content to share with the world or just to have fun with friends. To be honest, we haven't seen exactly how the "Share"On Xbox Series X and Sony has not yet explained in detail what the" Create "button can do, however, it is clear judging from the initial statements, that Sony has something in store definitely more innovative than Microsoft. Some enthusiasts and professionals have already ventured into predictions or hypotheses regarding the functions of the new DualSense button, such as access to particular features within a video game (let's not forget that PlayStation 5 it will be backwards compatible), or an evolution of the SHAREfactory service seen on PlayStation 4.
Integrated microphone
After adding a speaker on the DualShock 4, Sony is taking it a step further by adding a built-in microphone on the DualSense. Sure, not practical for long gaming sessions and certainly does not replace a good headset, but it's a good option to have if for example you want to send a quick voice message to a friend or maybe interact within a short conversation during a game. obviously don't expect the same quality of a microphone expressly conceived for this purpose, but it is still an additional feature that the competition does not have.
USB-C charging
Also in this generation, Sony will equip its DualSense controller with an internal battery that charges via USB-C. Microsoft is still allowing gamers to choose between AA batteries normal or rechargeable battery pack (sold separately) for the Xbox Series X controller, and while the company says the choice is based on feedback from gamers who wanted more possibilities for controller power management, we certainly can't help but say it's again a obsolete design choice. Having a pad that runs on AA batteries in 2020 is the same as having one hypercar with crank windows. If you want to evolve the power and charging of the Microsoft controller, you need a separately sold rechargeable battery pack and a USB-C a USB-A since the console it does not have a USB-C port.
The only concrete doubts that currently exist about this pad, in addition to the form factor with analogs in symmetrical configuration, are related for example to compatibility with VR: Sony has declared that PlayStation 5 will be compatible with VR, but the DualSense will it be in turn or will it be necessary to use the Dualshock 4? At the moment there have been no statements from the Japanese company, exactly as nothing is known about the compatibility of DualSense with PlayStation 4.
We would like to reiterate that these extra features, designed by Sony for DualSense, do not take into account the characteristic at the base of each game controller: the feeling of the player. Over the years we have witnessed real fashions or trends in the matter, light, heavy mice, keyboards with various types of mechanical, hybrid or membrane keys, mats that look like they came out of a NASA research center and other futuristic devices launched on the market, but the most important factor will always be the feeling. Microsoft has by far proved this with the Xbox One controller. a controller technically dated, powered by batteries, without lighting effects, but equipped with the right form factor it quickly became a favorite with most gamers. You may have the best controller or the best mouse in the world in your hands, but if you don't feel it as an extension of your hand, the spell will be irremediably broken.
Will Sony be able to take DualSense to the top of the console pad popularity list? We will certainly not know before the official launch on the market, however the conditions should all be there.
