The nightmare experienced by little Six, now three years ago, which seemed to have ended, even if not in the best way, returns with even darker and gloomy tones in this new adventure. On the occasion of the TGA Festival the demo on Steam (on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the demo will be released in early 2021) of Little Nightmares 2.
We tried it, and in this preview you can find out what we think.
This demo (quite short, about half an hour of play) puts us, as we already know, in the role of Mono, the new protagonist characterized by his envelope used as a helmet to protect himself from the horrors he will have to face. We are in the middle of a dark and disturbing forest that immediately manages to make us uncomfortable. The shots help to convey these feelings with small, but incredibly communicative, movements and openings in the backgrounds. A bit like it happened with the first chapter, therefore, the setting is one of the main points of the Little Nightmares experience, together with the audio sector that through deafening silence it causes more anguish than any music could.
In the second phase instead, we will take Mono inside a small house scattered in the woods. As of now, we players, we know we are not alone inside the building, and this contributes to anxiety and tension. Our first encounter, however, will not be with one of the typical evil creatures of the game, but with an old acquaintance: we are obviously talking about Six. An unrecognizable Six, probably due to the events (which we will not spoil) of the first chapter, but which we will find ourselves helping in the escape from the house, while a deformed being similar to those of Little Nightmares will hunt us down.
The gameplay remains almost the same as in the first chapter, at least in this short test that we could do. However, there are small differences between what Mono can do and what we could have Six do: the new protagonist will in fact be able to grab objects to hit just in front of him. During our test this mechanic served only to break obstacles, but we are sure that later, in the full game, it will also be possible to hit any enemies (as has also been seen in several trailers). We will also have to see how the cooperation mechanics between Mono and Six evolve, for now limited to simply helping each other to reach points too high for their stature.
What did this short Little Nightmares 2 test leave us then? We are confident that the work of Tarsier Studios will prove to be valid, as was the first chapter. The darker atmosphere, the even more pure horror tones and even more sense of anxiety are certainly, for now, the strengths of the production, which manages to bewitch the player with scary and fascinating views at the same time. If the gameplay manages to introduce more mechanics, differentiating the title from its predecessor, then we can say that we are facing a great title. We are therefore confident about Little Nightmares 2, and can't wait to get our hands on the full game.
Finally, we remind you that Little Nightmares 2 will be released on 11 February 2021 on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, while in the course of 2021 the upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be released.
