Considering that Sony hadn't bothered with the compatibility of the PlayStation 5, it was easy to think that the old glories could not be played.. The only compatibility Sony talked about was the one with PlayStation 4. After months of being asked all sorts of questions, Jim Ryan has finally cleared up the matter.
In a recent interview, the PlayStation CEO answered the most popular question. That is, if it will be possible to play the titles of the old generations of consoles of the Japanese house, those ranging from PS3 downwards. Ryan responded by saying that compatibility with PlayStation 4 would be the cornerstone of the development of the new console. Unfortunately, however, the implementation of new technologies, including the new SSD and DualSense, did not allow to obtain such a wide backward compatibility.
Given the proximity of the launch window of Sony's new generation, none of Ryan's statements should come as a surprise. The only sore point is that Sony's biggest competitor, Microsoft, has managed to implement full backwards compatibility that includes the first generation of Xbox on both Xbox One and the upcoming Xbox Series S and X.
