Review for Remothered: Broken Porcelain. Game for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the video game was released on 13/10/2020
Remothered: Tormented Fathers was a homegrown product released in 2018 that had already attracted the attention of many people to the point of winning several awards: today we bring you the review of its sequel entitled Remothered: Broken Porcelain. It is a horror-style video game with third-person action mechanics, developed by Stormind Games and published by Modus Games.
But the question that needs to be asked is: "Will the game live up to its predecessor?" In this review we will find out together what is the answer to this question.
The player plays Jennifer, a 15-year-old girl who - after being kicked out of boarding school due to her tendency to cause trouble - finds herself working as a janitor at the Ashmann hotel. However, the young lady's hiring is by no means a coincidence, because later on we will discover the precise reason why she was taken to that cursed place, and the closer Jennifer is to accomplishing her goal, the more she will realize that she is still there. start point.
Remothered: Broken Porcelain bases its story on a medicine called Phenoxyl, created by synthesis. The drug in question makes it possible to isolate any type of traumatic event, but with a serious consequence: a very fragile memory is created, defined as “porcelain”. By emulating the behavior of the moth, Phenoxyl can create a collective hypnosis in which some individuals are forced to obey a certain leader.
Particular is the non-linear narrative, which travels from the past to the present several times following the point of view of three different narrators: Rosemary, Jennifer as a young man and always the latter but in old age. For this reason, the explanation of the facts may appear unclear and confusing at the beginning, but it is so only to be able to energetically explode towards the last moments of the game in a hyper dramatic and moving ending.
The main characters are quite characterized, each of them with their own backgrounds that directly deal with the Ashmann Inn's dark past. Special is the between the protagonist and Linn, who by sharing moments together manage to escape from the disgust of past life inside the hotel, thus taking refuge for brief moments in an idyllic world where two teenagers can feel peaceful.
The gameplay of the title is a mixture of action e stealth, interspersed with cutscenes that sharply and brutally cut the shots through an upload. To be more specific, the player will have to fight their way through the enemies using cunning or brute force. When being followed and near one of the stalkers, the screen will flash red in order to warn the user and at the same time to make him feel more tension.
Too bad, however, that the gameplay is very irritating and not fun at all due to the huge amount of bugs present and above all for the senseless artificial intelligence. In fact, sometimes the stalkers will seem comically so inept that they cannot open a simple door, while other times they will chase the player and bump into him like real tanks. To fight enemies when they do not fit into the surrounding environment, you can use weapons only at certain times, or other objects as a diversion. If killed the bad guys will remain on the ground for a certain time, allowing you to pass a few moments of tranquility.
Nothing to say about the excellent background music, very empathetic and suitable for the scene. Same thing for the graphic sector created with Unreal Engine, composed of very detailed textures and remarkable light effects. Instead, it is worth noting the animations that sometimes do not work perfectly seasoned by an often wrong or non-existent lip-sync, to the point of being able to describe the characters as Muppets. Fortunately, the very serious problem is offset a little by the beautiful voices of the dubbers, who did a pretty good job.
A recurring theme in Remothered: Broken Porcelain is violence, which is expressed mainly with visual elements: examples are the blood and bruises that will appear on Jennifer's body when she receives several blows, or the brutal death scenes.
The writer is the same person who long ago took care of the preview, and who had deluded himself of its potential, which turned out to be not at all exploited as it should be at the release of the complete product. While you have a good time playing Remothered: Broken Porcelain, it can be said that the latter is not a well-crafted title on many fronts. Poorly crafted AI makes the gameplay frustrating and sometimes logic-less. The extremely dramatic storyline could have been the springboard for a masterpiece, but there are too many mistakes that prevent it from even approaching that name.
