Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is clearly a gift from the Lord. After disappointing millions of gamers with a sixth chapter that only had the gameplay terrifying, Capcom returns to the scene of the crime by means of a "reboot" capable of relaunching the series, until a few years ago synonymous with excellence in ' within the mangled universe of horror videogame productions.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Review

It does so by going back to the roots, using a formula decidedly devoted to survival horror, capable of embracing every single element making up these twenty years of the saga. Contrary to the decisive action swerve undertaken by Shinji Mikami with the fourth, spectacular episode of Resident Evil (then pursued by the two subsequent appointments of the franchise), the binary code of this last descent into hell oozes blasphemy from every pore, placing homo ludens at the center of a story that sees Ethan Winters receiving an audiovisual message from his partner, Mia, three years after his death.

A request for help that will lead Ethan and the gamer, de facto, to the villa owned by the Bakers, a family with not exactly orthodox habits, eager to welcome all those who went to find him in a decidedly violent and bloody way.

The welcome received by the gamer is, to all intents and purposes, destabilizing, stinging, almost deadly. And while Ethan mainly wonders what happened to his beloved, the viewer curses himself, having agreed to immerse himself in a virtual reality that, however fictitious, borders on photorealism. Escort of Pampers mandatory, in short, a suggested option to contain any organic manure immediately following each scare jump. Observable through a spectacular first-person view, the story of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is not one that is easily forgotten, corroborated as it is by a truly evocative and penetrating sound accompaniment.

Almost the entire video game takes place in a seamless apnea, with a contracted anal sphincter, with the fear that somewhere, hidden in the shadows, there may be some evil creature ready to end its adventure. Luck has it that, although even at standard difficulty there are particularly annoying situations characterized by a high challenge rate, both the frequent checkpoints and the infinite rescues contribute to making thegaming experience essentially free of any reason for frustration. Not even the return of trunks and an inventory of not exactly exaggerated dimensions can undermine that feeling of perfect usability that envelops the whole title.

This seventh episode, in a nutshell, is a pleasure to see and to play, being characterized by a gameplay capable of dynamically changing with the events narrated in the game. Without wanting to reveal anything at the plot level, it is impossible not to point out how, although the basic mechanics remain anchored to the need to search and find keys and objects without which it would not be possible to continue in the adventure, at every opportunity proposed by evolution the plot corresponds to a significant variation in the playful mood.

Sometimes pure survival, sometimes decidedly action, other times puzzle game, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a game that maintains a very high gross quality, managing to practically never tire, if not as a result of a slight decline in the quality of the sections played immediately following the epochal initial fragments and in correspondence with certain boss fights.

An interesting find: the history of the video game is also conveyed by means of videotapes available through the use of special readers, strategically installed in each of the settings that form the background to the events narrated. The use of this audiovisual material, bearer of precious flashbacks, will also allow to obtain valuable clues useful for the correct resolution of puzzles otherwise impossible to put behind them.

To be highlighted as the longevity of the horror game, which can be completed in about ten hours at the standard difficulty level, is raised by the possibilities related to the emerging gameplay, which often places the gamer at the center of an invisible narrative plot that can be modified (albeit in a rather modest way) through the actions perpetuated on the screen. The possibility of collecting treasures and powerful secondary weapons, combined with the prospect of being able to grasp every nuance of a story full of details, definitely invites a second, more in-depth, playthrough.

The version we tested, the one for PS4, fully supports PlayStation VR: the Sony viewer actually adds something to the whole experience, especially from the point of view of immersion, at the expense of a sensitive graphic downgrade and a game view characterized by a slightly reduced amplitude. A good pair of headphones and off to fear and total isolation.

To be highlighted the inclusion of a decent dubbing and how, in particular situations (few, fortunately), the uploads become really quite long. Nothing to worry about, mind you, as these circumstances occur above all in correspondence with the playful fragments kept inside the videotapes that can be recovered during construction.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Review

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the surprise of this beginning of 2017. Every aspect of the Capcom production embodies the virtues of a reboot evidently made with care and passion.

Bravely freeing itself from zombies and historical characters from the series started by Shinji Mikami, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is an excellent game, even before being an excellent episode of the saga. Make it yours, you will not regret it.
