An American physicist with odd habits, an unexpected vacation in a rural town in XNUMXs Germany and the disappearance of a doctoral thesis on quantum physics. No, it's not an episode of The Big Bang Theory but it's the context behind Trüberbrook, graphic adventure funded through Kickstarter and developed by the German btf, in which we will follow the "deeds" of Dr. Hans Tannhauser who, despite his Teutonic surname, is an American DOC, precursor of modern nerds.
Rarity for independent productions, thanks to the distribution of Headup Games, this title is cross-platform available on Steam, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
Out of this world
In the incipit of Trüberbrook we will meet the young Gretchen who, aboard her motorcycle, will be forced to stop at a deserted service station (definitely more American than German) because she runs out of fuel. Here we will get acquainted with the game system and with one of the main characters of this work: his journey will soon become intertwined with that of Hans Tannhauser, eclectic American physicist, on his way to Trüberbrook thanks to the winning of a mysterious lottery in which he does not remember participating, and true star of Trüberbrook.
The ironic and slightly odd scholar will immediately start documenting his journey through witty voice recordings for his assistant Beverly and will find in the peace and tranquility of the German township, an ideal place to finish the writing of his precious doctoral thesis. on quantum physics.
However, this initial quiet will be swept away immediately by the disappearance of his precious manuscript, during the first night of our stay in Trüberbrook, and will represent the starting point for our adventures. The search for the thief and the lost text will lead Tannhauser to discover the mysteries that lie behind the German village and its inhabitants.
From shades of yellow literature we will soon pass to much more sci-fi shades within a plot that hides several interesting ideas.
All just a click away
At the level of game mechanics we are in the perspective of a classic point and click that strongly winks at cornerstones of the genre like the Monkey Island and Broken Sword series above all for the irony that pervades the brilliant dialogues - unfortunately not translated into Spanish - and the various texts in the title. However, the good literary work done by BTF does not affect the complexity of its enigmas that very few times will be blocking especially due to the small number of game locations to explore and investigate.
Consequently, with a little logic and trial and error, even the less experienced player will be able to proceed smoothly and help Tannhauser in his quest.
Despite the aforementioned limited quantity, the gaming environments represent the flagship of the production behind Trüberbrook. All the environments and game backgrounds are in fact made manually and then acquired via 3D scanner and then be perfectly integrated with animations and moving objects.
The result of the work of the German team is a title that can easily be compared to famous stop-motion film productions by renowned directors.
The graphic rendering is, together with the writing work, the most successful aspect of Trüberbrook both because the level of difficulty is not excessive and because it results in a very limited longevity. The developers guaranteed a playable game experience between six and eight hours, however our test ended in less than five hours and without skipping the many dialogues present. Not even the 34 achievements present in the Steam version of the title are able to guarantee replayability or a net increase in longevity.
It follows that the few locations, the few puzzles and the limited hours of play leave a bitter taste in the mouth at the end of the game but, despite this the narration works well and returns an original story and not free from complexity. A final regret about the work comes from the soundtrack, definitely subdued compared to the visual sector: a real shame, because it would have represented a considerable surplus on the overall evaluation of the title.
Trüberbrook is a point and click graphic adventure that can certainly be a joy for players with many years of experience on their shoulders. However, newcomers to the genre will be tempted to try BTF's work above all thanks to its visual peculiarities but also to appreciate a sci-fi plot with various interesting ideas. The brevity, the small number of locations and the limited level of difficulty of certain puzzles, however, relegate the work of the German team to evaluations that unfortunately cannot aspire to excellence.
