The gems in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, as well as in the original, represent the core of the character enhancement system. Unfortunately, one inconvenience of this system is having to forge gems through the furnace in Colony 9. However, it is possible to obtain a portable version of the furnace, which will allow the creation of these upgrades via the game menu, wherever you are. So let's see how to get the portable furnace in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.
To acquire this important key object, a subquest must first be triggered. The NPC partly at the furnace in Colony 9, called the Gem Creator, will in fact have a subquest for the player, which will be unlocked by continuing in the story up to the narrative arc of Colony 6. Concluding that narrative arc will unlock the second fundamental step to obtain the portable furnace, the reconstruction of Colony 6. The subquest will in fact require you to get an item called Mini Reactor, which will be given to the player after reaching level 1 of the reconstruction of Colony 6.
Getting Colony 1 to level 6 is pretty simple, as the objects are all found on Bionis' Leg and in the Tephra caves, with the exception of the Igna skin, to be found by defeating the fighting Igna in the Satorl Swamp. The only element you may not have at that point will be the rain and rain element, which is obtained from the Aqua clouds on Bionis' leg only when the weather is rainy. Once Colony 6 has been brought to level 1, you will be given the Mini Reactor, and by taking it to the Gem Maker you will unlock the ability to craft gems anywhere you want in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition.
