A few days ago, the end of Nintendo 3DS production was announced after 9 years of great success and satisfaction, however Nintendo wanted to reassure the fans confirming that, although no new consoles will be produced "Nintendo and third-party titles for Nintendo 3DS family systems will continue to be available on Nintendo eShop, Nintendo.com and retailers". At the same time, Nintendo has ensured that 3DS players will still be able to enjoy the online game modes.
Here is the official statement from Nintendo:
We can confirm that the production of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems has ended. Nintendo and third-party games for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems will continue to be available on Nintendo eShop, Nintendo.com and in stores. The existing library of over 1.000 Nintendo 3DS games contains many critically acclaimed titles and can provide years of content to explore and enjoy.
A certainly predictable and correct decision to pay the portable console that succeeded the Nintendo DS, the product that guaranteed the most success in Nintendo's history in this market segment with 154 million units sold (the 3DS family has stopped to the remarkable figure of 75.9 million).
We currently have no plans to terminate existing online services for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Online play and Nintendo eShop will continue to be available and all previously purchased content will be accessible and re-downloaded in the near future.
With this last statement we can be sure that we will be able to enjoy all the services available for our Nintendo 3DS systems for a long time to come, now the question will concern the future of portable consoles at Nintendo: will there be other devices designed solely for portability or the move towards the hybrid Nintendo Switch and has the Smartphone market definitively decreed the end of Nintendo's development for portable consoles?
