La backward compatibility is a concept dear to many players still waiting for in-depth explanations about it. While it is already known that PlayStation 5 will support "the majority of the over 4000 titles in the PlayStation 4 catalog", as stated by Mark Cerny last March, the same does not seem to be said of the even earlier generations, namely PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and the first PlayStation.
According to the latest news, the engineers at Sony are still working on the technologies that will allow the compatibility between the games of the current flagship and its heir, for this reason an official list of the aforementioned titles has not yet been shared. Different speech regarding the less recent past: despite the rumor have followed over the months, the company has never stated that this possibility will be extended to other consoles.
It seems to have anticipated the Japanese giant by confirming this impossible prediction Ubisoft. On its official website, in the user support section, it is specified that backward compatibility "will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be accessible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games".
Curious to note that in the past few hours, after this information had bounced around the most disparate corners of the web, the editors of the site have removed any backward compatibility mention, leaving the following message: “As a central part of the update process, PlayStation offers a range of features to support the transition to the PlayStation 5 generation. Active players on PlayStation 4 will be able to participate in multiplayer games alongside players on PlayStation 5 ".
While waiting for Sony to explain precisely what the chosen path will be, for the moment we are waiting for a new big event that may not be long in coming.
