The adventure in Disco Elysium does not start in the best way. The protagonist of the game has lost his police inspector badge, his gun and all his memories. Things don't get better as the game progresses, but with this guide you can help your oppressed hero recover at least his badge, which will indicate the way forward as well as provide you with information on how to make the most of your trip.
Your badge is, honestly, one of the least troubling aspects of Disco Elysium when compared to all the other horrible things you'll discover. However, it is also an incredibly useful item. Retrieving it will restore your character's name and status as inspector and will then be visible on the right side of the newspaper. Retrieving the badge will also allow your hero to no longer look like a total failure in front of his fellow cops. Plus, by bringing the badge to Joyce, the corporate negotiator, you can earn her trust and gain valuable information about the murder that is the subject of your investigation.
Reclaiming your status as a policeman through the badge will make Joyce more reasonable and willing to help you. In short, it can be of great help. Finding the badge in Disco Elysium will not be easy: it will take a lot of time and energy but, once recovered, several resources that are very useful in the long run will be unlocked.
The first step to recovering your badge is wait. You will only be able to access the key element on Wednesday (the third day in Disco Elysium) and therefore it will require some patience even if in the meantime you can devote yourself to other activities to earn some more experience points. Investigate the broken fence behind the Whirling-in-Rags. With the right skills and a little luck you can reconstruct the trajectory of a vehicle that has crossed the area and then moved south. You will then unlock a secondary investigation to discover the reckless driver.
Just follow the traces as far south as possible to the pawnshop to continue the investigation. The latter will lead you to discover a vehicle beyond the river, on the opposite beach, but remember that you will have to wait until Wednesday to be able to conclude your investigation.
In fact, before Wednesday you will not be able to activate the mobile bridge that connects the two banks of the river. Nearby you will find a man intent on eating, willing to give you some salami to satisfy your hunger. The man will tell you the time when the bridge staff will arrive on Wednesday. Show up at the time indicated and you will find the bridge in place. Walking through it you will find yourself in a fishing village full of side missions, money and new items to collect.
You will also notice the reckless driver's car, crashed on the shore. If you interact with it you will be stuck there for two hours waiting for the low tide. Accept the advice of Kim who will tell you to wait between one dialogue and another.
The badge is inside the car that crashed. When low tide arrives, just open the vehicle door and retrieve your precious badge. Once collected you will need to interact with it through your inventory to get your real full name as well as new dialogue options when you return from Joyce.
