In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, even a few frames can make the difference between the jubilation of victory and the bitter tears of defeat. After taking a look at the advanced mechanics of the wonderful Nintendo crossover fighting game and orienting ourselves towards the best controller according to our needs, we are going to explore the possibilities offered by the configuration of the game pad.
For convenience we will use the GameCube controller as a reference, but the same settings apply to the Pro Controller and his fellow men.
Before going to explore the possibilities offered by the customization of the keys, it is necessary to say a few words on the general configuration options. From the main game menu go to the game options represented by the gear symbol and in the window that follows select "commands". Once you have selected the desired profile and the type of controller you are using, select “other settings” at the bottom left.
- Rumble
Disabling the vibration is a choice considered by many professional players, as it may distract you from making the correct input during the game, however if you are used to controller vibrations feel free to keep this setting on.
- A + B Smash Attack
A really unimportant option, it gives you the opportunity to perform a Smash attack by pressing A and B simultaneously, which is generally uncomfortable but never deleterious. In most cases you will perform smash attacks by tilting the analog stick and the A button.
- Quick jump
Also known as "Stick Jump", it allows us to make a jump by tilting the left stick upwards, imprecise option and generally discarded in favor of jumping by pressing the Y or X keys. Since quick jump couldn't be turned off in Super Smash Bros. Melee, many of the pro players have grown to match Stick Jump and still keep it active today. Anyhow some very advanced micro-mechanics of specific characters need it, while it is imperative to deactivate it with other fighters. Our advice is to keep it disabled and go and change this option in specific cases where you feel the need.
- Sensitivity
Although there is no official explanation regarding this option, it can be translated with the sensitivity in which the game records the inputs of the left stick. The opinions of professional players about its preferable setting is so conflicting that you just have to test which sensitivity is able to give you the gameplay feeling that best suits your needs.
Button assignments are not as obvious as you might assume and there are tricks that can improve your game quality with a very low learning curve.
- Directional cross
The use of the directional cross is normally dedicated to provocations, among other things disabled during the online game, whether the sensitivity of our distant opponents is offended. It matters little why going to assign the shield functionality to the four directionals, we will end up with four keys to press quickly in case you want to free yourself from a socket. This method is incredibly much more effective than any other ploy that can be considered.
- C stick
The use of the C stick (the right analog of the Controller Pro) is normally intended for Smash attacks. Change this option and target it for powerful attacks. Being able to perform the “Tilt Attack” independently from the direction of movement imposed by the left stick will open your gameplay to a universe of infinite new possibilities, try to believe.
- Y and X
In the standard configuration, both keys are intended for jump and most pro players use Y to jump, thanks to its verticality compared to the C stick. If like them you have made this mode yours, you just have to try to assign the grip to the X key, it is a great convenience for many not to have to move the right index finger from the shield key.
If you use some unusual but functional setting do not hesitate to share it with us, as these are only guidelines and solutions adopted by the professionals of the Smash competitive scene and no one forbids us to experiment with personal settings.
