If you don't want to use the Fragile tools, head to Tom Nook's tent and use Point Nook. Then, select the option to redeem Nook Miles.
One of the options, Great Tool Recipes, costs 3.000 Nook Miles. This schematic includes upgrades for the ax, shovel, net, watering can, slingshot and fishing rod. These new tools are much more durable than the Fragile variants and more expensive to create.
Most of these hardened tools work the same way as the Fragile tools, the Stone Ax is a little different. In fact, the Stone Ax is more resistant than the Fragile Ax and is not recommended for harvesting wood, as it is able to completely cut trees after a few swings.
